Folklore has it that Dulla Bhatti, a Rajput got two sisters Sundari and Mundari married as his own daughters and saved them from the tyranny of a landlord.

He set fire to the fields of the landlord and gifted the girls a feast of sugar, jaggery, sesame etc for the guests at the wedding.

Till this day the festival is celebrated as Lohri in North India, a bonfire is lit that is supposed to take away all evil and bad and turn it to ashes.

Candies made with sugar, jaggery, sesame and peanuts are distributed. The seasonal crop of Daikon or mooli is also used in the ritual.

Like halloween as kids we used to go door to door asking for these sweets & money and singing the folk song of Sundari and Mundari & din wadde raataan chotiyaa …

Thankfully our own family was as large as an entire neighbourhood would be 🧿 , we would sit around large bonfires listening to stories , eating peanuts, sweets and sharing hot cups of Chai. Bonhomie prevailed.

Cut to the present, most of us light small fires at home and the family sits around it. Singing kids asking for candy are gone.
Drum beats and dancers are rare too. But we still continue to dance and sing to the songs for our children to learn and take this tradition forward . Offering gur , moongfali , poocorns to fire, & then distributing in all family members and staff as Prashad is what our kids will remember and may-be continue for long 🙂

Wishing this festival of hope brings happiness and good health for everyone !
Days of pleasure, weeks of joy, months of happiness, and a year of success. Here’s wishing you a and your family cheerful Lohri!

“We have always been a family for whom food conversations surpass every other discussion over a get together. We just love eating *good* food. I have learned the art of making food that not only tastes good but is aesthetically appealing too from my Mom, who is the most amazing cook I know till today.

I started Once upon a Plate around 3.5 years ago with my Mom to share her wonderful recipes and our endless food photoshoots when she would present a beautiful platter. Unfortunately I lost her & post that I stopped visiting the page until the lockdown happened last year where I revisited our insta page & named it Once upon a plate rewind! I started posting on the page again - her recipes made by me, to share with family and friends. Passion for cooking and now sharing what I cook on social media gave me immense joy seeing friends try the recipes and send constant appreciation messages .

After being appreciated and encouraged to start this commercially, it was a totally different experience. Professionally, I am a Life Skills trainer with corporates and management colleges. This new passion of cooking mom's most famous Biryanis gave me a different kind of contentment. I totally fell in love with the idea of taking this forward, along with my professional commitment on weekdays. So here I am doing what I learned the best!”
