The Icon We Finally Learned to See

Written by .divakar , who previously worked on our “Steeped In Madras” series as a guest writer. It only made sense to get her to write about Silk too. When asked, she said, “I wanted to mainly touch upon the idea of Silk, and treated her as a subject rather than the person. I feel like there’s a lot of pieces out there talking about her, quoting instances and stating facts; but this piece is more about how Silk was held as a concept by society at large.

We are here to stay; fangirling, adoring, marvelling, remembering. Silk na silk dhaan, la?

Davrah Coffee and Kalaki Collective’s “Smooth Like Silk 2026 calendar” is here for us to cherish her. A month-by-month ode proving some things only get better with time!

After all, what’s a calendar if not a reminder that Silk is timeless?

🗓️ A month-by-month ode proving some things only grow more beautiful with time.

📌Inspired by the pin-up posters and calendars of the ’50s and ’60s, Silk Smitha flirts with nostalgia, with a stare that always stays influential!

Part poster, part calendar, all style - it’s the kind of piece your wall will thank you for.

Inspiration actually comes greatly from something that already exists, or from things we see everyday but fail to notice closely. Like an ornamental door / grill, painted signboards. All that old world charm that’s quietly coming back. Isn’t design and trend something that repeats every few decades or so?

The Coffee Dabba is inspired by
- All those cookie Dabbas that deceptively stored small trinkets along with some change and sewing kit maybe?

- Vintage Thagara (Tamil word for ‘Tin’) Dabbas that had bold colours and well-structured typography on it

- Old metal painted signboards

brought it to life by exactly grasping the inspiration behind it, effortlessly blending timeless classic designs for a modern day reinvention of filter coffee.

A drink that we wake up with, has had tough luck and been compared even to illegal substances and shunned by many as it was blamed for bringing "western influences" and "health problems" into our Tamil society.

In a 1914 chapbook titled 'Englandu Kappikkum Indian Palayathukkum Nerntha Chandai Chindu' -
"'Cold Rice’ accused ‘Coffee’ of marginalising curd and buttermilk; even coolies had ceased to take 'neeragaram', demanding coffee in its stead. However, coffee was not a mere substitute for some traditional drink, whatever be its nutritive value and cultural position."

Every great product has a story and that's what sells, right? You buy into the idea & concept, rather than the product itself. These 'Taste & Technique' sessions are all about understanding the very difference between off the market blends and premium blends.

Almost a year ago, when we had to renovate and shut shop because the then store operator quit abruptly, Vasanth came into our lives as a godsend!

A fresher in the 'food / café industry, Vasanth shot to fame after our 2.0 opening of Davrah! His work ethic and warmth impressed everyone alike. We fondly call him the 'owner' of our café.

It's safe to say that he is an inevitable cog in the Davrah Machine and we're happy to have him on our side as we grow!

Happy Birthday, Vasanth! Onwards and upwards! ✨🪬
