The Legacy Behind Novelty Restaurant – A Family History

Novelty Restaurant, located in Sector 22, Chandigarh, is more than just a place to dine — it is a living legacy, woven into the very fabric of the city’s early history. As the first restaurant of Chandigarh, Novelty stands as a proud symbol of resilience, tradition, and timeless hospitality.

Humble Beginnings Rooted in Partition

The story of Novelty Restaurant begins with Shri Niranjan Rai Ji, a refugee who migrated from Pakistan during the time of India’s Partition. A man of vision and determination, Shri Niranjan Rai Ji carried with him not only the memories of his homeland but also a dream to rebuild his life in a new India.

He was joined by his close friend and companion from pre-Partition days, Shri Joginder Pal Puri Ji. Together, they laid the foundation for their culinary venture in the newly planned city of Chandigarh. In 1959 they started their business journey, which eventually evolved into what is today known as Novelty Restaurant.

Being the first restaurant of Chandigarh, Novelty quickly became a landmark, known for its comforting flavors and warm service. It earned the love and loyalty of residents, travelers, and even many prominent political personalities, who continued to visit regularly.

A Legacy Passed Down Through Generations

After the passing of Shri Niranjan Rai Ji, who had no children or immediate family, the restaurant was respectfully handed over to his friend and business partner, Shri Joginder Pal Puri Ji. Under his leadership, the restaurant continued to grow, maintaining the same principles on which it was founded.

Tragically, Shri Joginder Pal Puri Ji passed away unexpectedly in an accident, leaving the business in the hands of his son, Shri Manoj Kumar Puri Ji. A dynamic and visionary leader, Manoj Ji not only maintained the legacy of the original restaurant but also took it a step further by expanding the business.

Expansion Era: Fast Food Branch

During his tenure, Manoj Kumar Puri Ji opened a fast food branch of Novelty Restaurant , Respectively inaugurated by then Finance Minister Honourable Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal ji , introducing quick-service offerings to meet the evolving tastes of younger generations and busy professionals. This bold move added a modern touch to the legacy brand and attracted a whole new customer base, while still holding true to its roots.

His vision ensured that Novelty remained not just a name of the past, but a relevant and respected name for the future as well.

Continuing the Tradition – Sahil Puri

Following the unfortunate passing of Manoj Kumar Puri Ji in 2012, the responsibility of carrying forward this precious family heritage fell to his son, Sahil Puri. With deep respect for the legacy he inherited, Sahil continues to run Novelty Restaurant with commitment, integrity, and a passion for quality.

Today, Novelty remains a place where history, flavor, and community come together — a destination cherished by old and new generations alike.
