The Ocean Between Us is a cross-cultural, immersive movement theatre project grounded in contemporary dance and writing. The work treats the body as a vessel for communication, connection, and care: a space to wrestle with difficult questions. Who are we beyond the labels, and how do we bridge the “ocean” of race, gender, economics, and identity that divides us?

Shera began as a short film and grew into a graphic book, hand-painted by acclaimed artist Allen Shaw, bringing to life the magic and mystery of the Himalayan valleys of Kumaon. Beyond the adventure lies a story about home, moving away, and a community learning to share its world with a wild, wonderful neighbour.

This lecture explores how excellence in scientific research begins with the individual; with curiosity, rigour, and imagination, growing outward into the institutions and cultures that sustain it.

Drawing on decades spent at the frontier of theoretical physics, Rajesh Gopakumar turns to a more urgent question: how can India nurture and nourish scientific excellence at every level, from the solitary researcher to the institutions built to support them? Great science, he argues, is never possible alone.

This discussion, based on the book The De-democratisation Project, argues that seismic shifts in the world, the genocide in Gaza, Russia’s war on Ukraine, the US-Israel war on Iran, cannot be understood through the outmoded West-versus-Rest lens. The true crisis of our time, it suggests, is a global attempt to undo the hard-won consensus that democracy and human rights are universal. The conversation imagines a different map altogether: one built on solidarity, and the shared aspiration of democracy.

This event centres on the English translation of D.R. Nagaraj’s final and most innovative work: an engagement with the twelfth-century Shaiva mystic and poet, Allama Prabhu. The session opens with an introduction to Allama and his enigmatic vachanas, moves into a reflection on the work of translating into English the nuanced thought of Nagaraj, and arrives at a conversation on what it takes to carry a difficult, vital inheritance across language and time.

➡️ Fire Drawing Workshop

In this hands-on workshop participants learn a technique the artist has spent five years developing: burning or “fuming” wood with matches, candles, and pyrography tools to create textured, tonal, almost painterly images. The process allows partial control over the outcome, producing fine relief-like details and layered effects akin to glazing with flame.

Please Note: Limited to 50 seats. Children 6+ are welcome to attend, provided they are accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
