➡️ The Fear of Oblivion

In this lecture, Professor Fontanini examines the ethical dimensions of death and mourning in the digital age, a field of study known as cyberthanatology. He explores the implications of digital immortality, where artificial intelligence, virtual reality and mind-uploading technologies simulate aspects of human identity beyond death, and at the same time raise questions around autonomy, privacy and the commodification of grief.

➡️ Secrets and Lines: A Short History of Boundaries in India

From the nineteenth century, India’s mapping history hardened into rigid visual, legal, and administrative lines, often stripping out affect while retaining older structures of power. Historian Samira Sheikh, Associate Professor at Vanderbilt University and the current Obaid Siddiqi Chair in the History and Culture of Science, will deliver this year’s lecture series tracing that very history: from the missing archive of early modern mapping to the moment political boundaries entered Indian cartography. This final lecture completes the arc, uncovering what survived beneath these lines.

The performance brings together Deborshee Bhattacharjee on vocals, Roopak Kallurkar on tabla, and Vighnesh Bhagavat Yellapur on harmonium, three classical musicians from distinct gharana traditions, performing ragas at the hour they were written for.
