Can you guess this new leafy green in our menu ?

We’ve often been asked about Mizuna and what exactly is different about this unique Leafy Green. The next few posts are dedicated to it and of-course for those who are keen to know more about it.

Stage 3 or Ready for Harvest !
Most leafy greens are ready for harvest when they are 10-12 weeks old. All lettuce variety , basil , spinach , amaranthus etc fall under this category.
Whereas plants such as Celery, leaks and hard herbs such as rosemary have a longer harvest period.

Stage- 2
During this stage , plants are usually 4-6 weeks old. They start to take shape of their adult self and are full of flavour !
A lot of these young saplings are bitter as the flavour neutralises itself as and when the plants grow bigger.

Going through the various stages of plant growth !

Stage 1 - For most leafy greens, seeds germinate within 7-10 days of sowing. At this stage , the young saplings are very sensitive to heat , moisture and other environmental factors. Therefore, the utmost care is needed to maintain the health of the plants so they grow into the nutritious and green plants that you see when you order from us 😊

It’s not always GREEN!

While having many advantages and being a popular set-up of choice for many hydroponic growers , this system comes with many of its own challenges..

It is a very convenient system to grow leafy greens, however , the system is bound to fail and collapse if all its moving parts are not working simultaneously and effectively.
Plants are also very susceptible to the flow of water from power outage or other reasons.
The channels could also get choked with the developed root zone and therefore, need continuous checking and trimming.

All the fuss when you can’t even grow vegetables or fruits with large tab roots!

Any one of these small set backs and you can have a complete system failure while loosing all your crop overnight..

In the NFT system, there are 2 main components: the grow tray (or channel) and the reservoir that contains water and nutrients.

In the grow tray, there are net pots that contain the growing media that holds the plants and reserve nutrients from the nutrient solution.

The NFT system uses a pump to deliver water to the grow tray and a drained pipe to recycle the unused water nutrient solution.

So How does this work?

It uses GRAVITY ! The grow tray is placed at an angle (supported by a rack or on a bench) to let the water flow down towards the nutrient return pipe. The excess nutrient solution will flow out of this pipe and move into another channel , where it is recirculated through the system again.
The roots of the plants hang down to the bottom of the channel where they come into contact with the nutrient solution and absorb the nutrients from them.
The thin film of the nutrient solution allows the plants to be watered but not entirely soaked…helping them grow without too much water or even soil ..

Ever wondered about the NFT system that everyone keeps talking about while referring to Hydroponic Farming?

In the domain of soilless culture, the nutrient film technique system (or NFT system) is fairly popular with hydroponic growers due to its simple yet effective design.
There are various ways to design a NFT system; however, all of them take after the design of a very shallow nutrient solution pouring down through the tubing.
The bare roots of the plants absorb the nutrients in the solutions when they come into contact with the water. The system also drains the unused water while recycling it in the process.
It is often used to grow smaller and quick growing plants like leafy greens and fresh herbs.

We would be talking more about it in the coming few posts.. stay tuned !
