Back in 1914, when Jaffa’s port was crowded with merchants, there was a small house from which wafted a special aroma. There, a man would roast and blend coffee beans, while his admiring daughter sat at his side, proudly and attentively watching him at work. Merchants passing through would come to the man’s house to drink his coffee, and tell stories. The merchants began to call the daughter Basma. In Arabic, Basma means: a smile, so it was no surprise that it had become the nickname of the man’s constantly smiling daughter. And soon, Basma also became the name of his coffeehouse. With the years, Basma acquired much knowledge and experience of roasting and blending the coffee, and she passed them on to her daughters, sons, and granddaughters. Now, in June 2014, one hundred years later, a new version of “Basma – Grandma’s Coffee” proudly returns to Jaffa .
