Our Kniphofia have surprised us all this year.
They multiplied generously and have produced a wonderful display over the past month. They have survived batterings from gales of wind and still stood tall.
Their soft shade of orange  and Indian yellow glow in  the shafts of low winter sun and match the yellow of the dying leaves of the Acer palmatum and the glowing rich red of Acer Oskazuki.

Maybe autumn isn’t so bad after all.
Fruit trees heavily laden; from top left :
Apple Discovery
Apple Dick Davies
Apple Lord Lambourne
Pear Beth
These were planted in 2011, root stock from Future Forests.
They took a few years to establish and strengthen.
2020 is looking like the best yield so far.

With the excitement of the arrival of the Iris Reticulata in January and the flowering of our lovely white Camellia, then came Helleborus a plenty followed by daffodils in all their cheerfulness in March.

April brought our Woodpeckers and the trauma of their wind swept nest. It also brought Magnolia Stellata, understated and lovely.

May brought a great show of old roses  Madame Lauriol de Barny, in particular who climbed up through our huge Rhododendron.

June and the lovely Ligularia leaves start to unfold with Astrantia major for company.

July and August are the Lily season with us.
Tall Tree Lily Mr. Job and Pink perfection tower over the Shasta daisies.
Hydrangeas show themselves off to perfection.

And now September is here and  it is over for another year.
The Carnival is Over.

Mother duck making a nice nest for herself in the this lovely grass by the pond. But what a mouth full of a name for this wonderful clump forming damp loving grass from Japan ;
Hakonechloa Gramineae macra.

The grass is a warm golden-yellow, finely striped with green and puts up with any amount of trampling from the ducks. It’s reflection in the pond always brightens up my day.

It will suffer any treatment so long as it’s feet are damp. Well worth having if you have water in the garden.

It’s difficult to get reds to work together; this is a colour observation without political connotation🚫.

Some reds tend towards the left and are more bluish and violet, others lean towards the right and have shades of yellow and orange.

Abutilon 'Ashford Red' and Crocosmia 'lucifer' seem a perfect match.
They both have a slight leaning towards yellow /orange and late July early August suits them both to come into their own and give their all.

Abutilon 'Ashford Red' has been a great addition to our garden.
Here it is planted densely to create a grove and the flower colour and maple leaf shape is eye catching from now until mid November.

Plant it deep is my main advice, it needs a good base to withstand the Autumn gales.
Major pruning in late Spring will give plenty of cuttings for propagation and its strike rate is high.
You too will have an Abutilon Grove in no time.

In his book ‘The well -tempered garden’ Christopher Lloyd states:

I suppose the common Myrtle, Myrtus communis, must be my favourite south-wall shrubs. The rich, spicy fragrance of its bruised leaves is etherealised,at flowering, into an air-bourne scent that comes to meet you. It’s flowering season, in August and September, is particularly useful and the white blossoms, with their pouffs of creamy stamens, are bourne in thousands on a mature plant.

I couldn’t have put that better myself 🤷 could I??

A favourite in Royal bridal bouquets since before queen Victoria’s time, Megan Markle’s bouquet is reputed to have had a sprig of Myrtle.

I appreciate the lovely cinnamon bark with its suede like texture.
And btw , it self seeds freely; get in touch if you would like to start your own Myrtle grove.

Lilium Mr.Job is a great mixer.
At this time of year its lovely vanilla cream petals stained with red wine mixes with a lot of shrubby plants.

Mr. Job , an Oriental x trumpet Lily is fragrant and hardy.
It grows tall and appreciates a shrubby shoulder to lean on.
Here it is pictured mingling with Leycesteria formosa, the Himalaya honeysuckle, aka flowering nutmeg, granny's curls or pheasant berry.
A very useful shrub whose name I only came to know of recent times.

Leycesteria formosa was a childhood favourite of Gertrude Jekyll who describes it as
'A soft wooded shrub, whose beauty , without being showy, is full of charm and refinement'
That's what we like here at Cloncallow, charm and refinement 😃

Look who fancies some fish for tea, M. The grey Heron. Just spotted him perched on the mound of stones in the middle of the pond.

Our Monday fix-it-man Will recons we have three young salmon🐠 in the pond. He also spotted a kingfisher earlier on.
He is planning to bring his fly fishing gear with him next week.

We had a black and white weekend:

Black
Yesterday morning a Raven was heard and spotted on the tallest spruce tree .The voice was so distinctive,we knew this was previously unheard in the garden. We looked up and up and up.
Take away: must invest in decent binoculars.

White
This morning, 10am we had a visit from a Snow White Egret. I saw it sail in and land on a weeping birch tree overlooking the pond. It’s flight was so like the heron who visits us frequently. Because it is not as big as the heron the ducks were not Intimidated into total silence, as they are when the heron lands on the side of the pond.
