The garderobe at Roscrea Castle (located in County Tipperary) is a fascinating piece of medieval plumbing. It features a private, stone-built toilet built directly into the thick walls of the gatehouse.

You can find the preserved medieval toilet hidden in a mural passage on the second floor (or upper living area) of the 15th-century gate tower.

Built with a stone seat, the garderobe discharged human waste through a nearly vertical chute (which archaeologists have excavated to be about 7.15 meters deep) straight to the outside.

In medieval times, the ammonia from the waste often helped deter insects, and the drafts provided natural ventilation. This floor of the tower is also where the drawbridge was operated.
