We’re starting small, right here in PS Coffee Roasters, and we’d love for you to be part of it.

Costa Rica is famous for its coffee, and there are some pretty unique things that make it special:

High-altitude, volcanic soil – Most Costa Rican coffee is grown in mountainous regions (like Tarrazú, Central Valley, and Arenal), where rich volcanic soil and cooler climates give beans a balanced flavor and bright acidity.

100% Arabica by law – Since 1989, Costa Rica has banned the planting of lower-quality Robusta beans. Every farm grows only Arabica, known for its smoothness and complex taste.

Sustainability & eco-focus – Many coffee farms are small, family-run fincas. Costa Rica leads in eco-friendly practices, from shade-grown coffee that supports biodiversity to water conservation in processing.

Specialty processing methods – Costa Rica is famous for its “honey process,” where some of the coffee fruit mucilage is left on the bean during drying. This gives the cup a natural sweetness, like honey, caramel, or tropical fruit.

Coffee culture – Coffee isn’t just a crop here; it’s part of the national identity (“el grano de oro,” the golden bean). You’ll often see traditional chorreador filters in homes, and coffee is a social ritual.

Finca Rosa Blanca – Costa Rica’s Grain of Gold

High in the volcanic slopes of Poás and Barva, we visited Finca Rosa Blanca, led with passion by its owner Glenn Jampol and his dedicated team. Here, coffee isn’t just grown – it’s crafted with heritage and heart.

Soil & Sustainability
The secret lies in the rich volcanic earth, constantly renewed with worm-produced compost (vermiculture) and organic matter from the farm itself. No pesticides, no shortcuts – only natural remedies that create living soil, nourishing every bean.

Shade & Nature
With over 5,000 indigenous trees planted, Rosa Blanca thrives as a biological corridor for birds and wildlife. Coffee here grows in harmony with nature, not against it.

Golden Coffee – El Grano de Oro
Costa Ricans call coffee their “grain of gold,” and at Rosa Blanca, that legacy shines. From classic Arabica varietals like Caturra and Obatá to the world-famous Gesha (Geisha), every harvest represents both a cultural treasure and a symbol of prosperity for the nation

When we started this roasting business with just 3 sacks of coffee, one of those was a sack from Brazil. Brazilian coffee has always been amongst our most popular origins of coffee because of the crowd pleasing flavours they produce. This summer we had the amazing opportunity to journey across the world to visit some of the producers we have bought from over the years. To meet the families, their dogs and see and taste the coffee cherries straight from the tree was such a delight.

Of the farms we visited on this trip, all of the farmers echoed the same heart warming sentiment that there would always be a part of Brazil here for us. They genuinely appreciated our support and seeing how they operate gave us a new level of respect for what they do and offer back to us.

As part of this trip we visited Carmo Estate (part of our Project Sustainability), Caxambu which was incredibly advanced and modern, Passeio/Lagoa/Pico Mirante which was the most beautiful with strong emphasis on using solar energy to power their machinery, and, one of the farm projects we wanted to explore of course was Bobolink because of our long term relationship with this coffee. Bobolink is part of Faf who encourages regenerative farming practices for all the producers who contribute towards Bobolink. We were so impressed by their progressive attitude with their strong emphasis on improving soil health.

Thank you Brazil. You were brilliant ❤️

Good sourcing, constant learning and relationship building are so important in our industry. Towards the end of February we were fortunate enough to be invited to Bordeaux to meet up with the team at .coffee who gave us the amazing opportunity to converse and learn from top talent in coffee. Ive heard before that hanging out with (a room full of) “A” players inspires and improves others who do. I feel we left on a such a positive buzz from this, encouraged to progress from here.

This week our Roasting team is in France to meet up with .coffee to explore, taste and potentially pick some new 2025 Ethiopian coffee coming in this year. We are also here to build relationships, communicate and learn from producers and guest speakers about the challenges and opportunities facing Ethiopia and our industry. Some really interesting conversations. We are looking forward to what the rest of this week will bring.
