There’s a huge difference between that bag of sugar in your cupboard and the sugars added into a store-bought cake.

When I bake at home, I use real ingredients, (real butter, real sugar, flour and eggs). But that store bought cake is loaded with:

Things like Dextrose and Fructose to keep it fresh on a shelf for months.

These extra sugars are engineered to bypass your “I’m full” signal, making you crave more before you’ve even finished.

When you bake at home, these sweet treats don’t have those sugars, just plain, honest, simple sugar

“Is a wedding cake actually worth it?” 🎂

Honestly… it depends on you as a couple.

A wedding cake isn’t just dessert — it’s a tradition, a photo moment, and it’s a big chunk of your wedding budget.

For some couples, cutting the cake is one of those memories they’ll treasure forever. It adds to the atmosphere, looks beautiful in photos, and gives guests something sweet to carry home.

For others? Guests barely eat it, the cake gets left behind, and the money could have gone toward something that mattered to you more,

Here’s the truth:
✨ You do NOT need a massive 5-tier cake to have a beautiful wedding.
✨ A small cutting cake or desserts can work perfectly.
✨ If cake matters to you, it’s worth every penny.
✨ If it is not, skip it

The best weddings aren’t about following traditions or coping your friends wedding or instragramable weddings.
They’re about choosing what actually feels meaningful to you.

THE COUPLE....

There is something inherently magical about a wedding at Aherlow House Hotel. Maybe it’s the way the Galtee Mountains frame every window, or how the air just seems clearer up in the Glen. But let’s be honest—while the views are breathtaking, the wedding cake is the undisputed star of the reception room.

Check out this beauty from my most recent visit there.

Let’s be honest: The cake you pick up in the supermarket or the cake made from powder mix from a box or a bucket aren’t for made for their beautiful flavour and texture, they’re made for for shelf life. For a cake to stay fresh for a long time, it will be packed with stabilizers, vegetable fat blends, and preservatives designed to last longer than the celebration itself.
I’m not posting this to scare mongar anyone, all these additives and preservatives are regulated under EU regulations.
I’m just making homemade treats, cakes and desserts, keeping all these to a minimum. Just real butter, chocolate without palm oil, sugar and eggs.
The smell of freshly baked around the house, making memories of that taste just like whoever used to make.
And all because celebrations should taste like real food, not a chemistry project.

I know, I know… Call the chef police.
I fully understand this is “controversial,” but I refuse to make Red Velvet for my family. Why? Because I don’t like using Synthetic food dyes and will avoid using them if there is an alternative option. Now, I’m no “clean-eating” purist, I’m realistic enough to realise my kids probably encounter enough questionable ingredients out in the world. But I try to limit them as much as possible when baking cakes and dessert here at home.
I’ve got plenty of flour, eggs, sugar, butter, and cocoa in my press. I can bake a cake that doesn’t have a list of ingredients the length of my arm.
I’m as time-poor as the next person, and I want the convenient option, but if we can’t make time to create memories and share real food made together, what have we actually got?
Have you ever baked something and thought this is so much more fulfilling than picking up a store bought one?
Tell me in the comments.

Baking can be the ultimate ego-checker but with every mistake it also teaches us something.
You can follow a recipe perfectly, then the whole thing goes wrong for whatever reason, your oven temperature is inaccurate or ingredients aren’t at room temperature.
But there is an up side…..
Baking fails are basically “tasty science experiments”, that offer some great life lessons for both parents and kids:

Baking teaches resilience. It teaches you thst you aren’t always in control.

Baking fails force you to problem solve creatively. It teaches that almost any problem can be transformed into something else with a little imagination.

Every baking fail has a reason., it is so important to learn the why behind the science of baking and how ingredient interact.

In a world of filtered “Pinterest-perfect” cakes, a lopsided, homemade cake teaches that effort, taste and memories matter so much more and last longer than perfection..

Precision Matters
Baking needs to be percise the importance of reading instructions and measuring accurately is so important to get yout bake right. This is a lessons that can be carried over into schoolwork and other projects in our day to day lives.

Do you have a baking disaster that you can laugh and talk about?

You’re standing in the baking aisle, looking at the boxes of cake mix and store bought cakes. You want a nice cake for that special occasion but don’t know where to start. Then you start to read the box and you’re staring at that long list of processed ingredients and thinking, “There has to be a middle ground, maybe feelint that Mom Guilt creep in thinking, “There has to be a middle ground.”

Im here to tell you….There is!

You don’t need a professional kitchen or loads of fancy ingredients or equipment to bake from scratch. Homemade isn’t about being “Pinterest Perfect” It’s actually about knowing exactly what’s going into your cakes. (all you need is flour, sugar, eggs and butter to produce something pretty magical).
When you make a home made cake you are

1.Able to control the junk:
You decide the quality of the cake. No artificial colourings, palm oil etc or perserativites for that long shelf-life.

2.Able to avoid the ugly cake rule.
The kids at any party don’t care about the instagramable cake. They care about the sprinkles, the candles, and the fact that they helped made it. A lopsided cake made with love beats a factory-made one every time. There is no ugly cake in a child’s eyes.

3 Able to make something with simple ingredients.
You’d be surprised how much stress disappearswhen you realise you already have everything you need at home in your cupboards and a recipe card that works every time.
