Wishing everyone a very happy Winter Solstice from Lough Gur! Celebrating the shortest day of the year. As the days stretch out ahead of us we look to brighter times.

We're almost there ... The shortest day of the year ... Brighter days are coming ☺️

Each year many people contact us enquiring about the Winter Solstice. Presently, there are no confirmed alignments known at the Grange Stone Circle linking it with the shortest day of the year. Of course, the people who built the circle were certainly aware of the Winter Solstice, even if they did not mark it specifically at Grange, and it seems safe to say that the day was celebrated, in some form, at prehistoric Lough Gur.
Following this, Newgrange is internationally recognised for its links to the Winter Solstice, and for 17 minutes each year the interior of the monument is illuminated by the rays of the rising sun; an incredible sight, that only a lucky few get to experience in person each year. Of course, there is also a livestream which allows the rest of us to see one of the ancient world's most impressive engineering feats. I am including a link to the livestream below (which is scheduled to begin around 8.40 am):

https://www.gov.ie/en/office-of-public-works/news/winter-solstice-at-newgrange-2025/

The livestream is hosted by Dr. Clare Tuffy and Dr. Frank Prendergast, who will act as expert guides and narrators on the morning. Frank will be joining us in 2026 for our inaugural Archaeology Festival which will be taking place in July. A long time friend and explorer of Lough Gur's past, Frank will be talking about wedge tombs and their solar links. A talk not to be missed. This festival, alongside many more, will be officially announced in January 2026 - so keep your eyes on our social media!
