Burke and Hare: Body Snatchers, Serial Killers, Ulstermen

Dark historian Andrew Johnston of Alternative Ulstours takes his 2025 Edinburgh Festival Fringe sell-out show on the road!

Scotland’s infamous grave robbers William Burke and William Hare weren’t Scottish – and they never robbed a grave. Born and raised in Ireland, the duo were arguably the first modern serial killers, predating Jack the Ripper by decades.

Andrew reveals the grim reality behind this misunderstood pair. Follow their journey from rural Ulster origins to the sinister Edinburgh slayings, when they provided unscrupulous anatomists with fresh corpses during the body snatching era.

The talk honours Burke and Hare’s forgotten victims, while exposing the fate of the murderers, their complicit wives and their nefarious paymaster, Dr Robert Knox.

Unearth the truth, as Andrew reclaims history’s grisliest ghouls for the north of Ireland in this informative and entertaining evening of horror and true crime!

▪ Ardal O’Hanlon: Not Himself - Thursday October 1 ▪

Oh, it’s all there! All the trademarks are in evidence in Ardal’s latest show. Beautifully crafted stand-up comedy? Yes. Celebrated use of language? Tick. Lateral thinking, surreal flourishes, sharp observations? Of course. As for the occasional profundity? Maybe.

Despite his best attempts over many decades to put the world to rights, it is still a colossal mess. And so, Ardal has no choice but to go out on the road again. Like the good comedy doctor he is, he fearlessly diagnoses the various pathologies and neuroses that are currently ravaging humanity. Disclaimer: No solutions provided.

After an alarming experience at the supermarket, Ardal reflects on who he is as a man and a comedian. He examines his own ethnic and religious background. And thinks twice about the very core of his identity as a voice of reason. Is everything a big lie? With no major trauma of his own to draw on for material, apart from the drag of getting older, he also turns his gaze outwards at the joys and follies of contemporary life. Towel Animals? A.I.? Chair Yoga? Cauliflower as a main course? Yes. Yes. Yes. And Yes. No current idiocy is left unexamined. With a highly developed sense of the ridiculous, and proper comedy bones, NOT HIMSELF, is a testament to the healing power of humour. And the joy of jokes.

Ardal is not only an acclaimed stand-up comedian who has performed world-wide. He will be familiar to many from his appearances in TV shows such as Taskmaster and Would I Lie To You?, leading roles in Death In Paradise, Fr Ted, and My Hero as well as cameos in Derry Girls, The Woman In The Wall, Return To Paradise and Rosie Molloy Gives Up Everything. He will soon be seen in the new Netflix series, How To Get To Heaven From Belfast. His second novel A Plot to Die For? will be released in 2026.

▪ Hello Charlie - Friday September 25 - Saturday September 26 ▪

So what is Hello Charlie all about? Well wait till we tell you...

Hello Charlie is a laugh-out-loud comedy about sisters Maeve and Kate, and Maeve’s beloved, inebriated alter-ego: Charlie.

“Funny, fearless and thought provoking. Hello Charlie is an incredible piece of work and Caoimhe Farren is a remarkable new voice.” – Lisa McGee, creator of Derry Girls.

Produced by SkelpieLimmer, Front and Centre, and An Grianán Theatre in association with Pavillion Theatre, Fishamble, and The Lyric Theatre Belfast.

Hello Charlie follows sisters Maeve and Kate. They have fled their past trauma in Derry and now live in London. Hedonistic Maeve binge-drinks to oblivion; brittle Kate sees history repeating itself. But Maeve dodges culpability for her drunken antics; the blame clearly lies with her drunken alter-ego: Charlie.

Balancing pitch-black humour with emotional honesty and lived experience, Hello Charlie offers an unflinching look at the realities of addiction while celebrating the resilience, complexity and dark wit of the north of Ireland.

▪ Earthfall – Undercurrent - Monday October 5 ▪

A gripping high energy show, Earthfall weaves dance theatre and circus with cultural dances from Zimbabwe, Brazil and Ireland.

From jaw dropping aerial, to quiet moments of connection, Earthfall brings an intergenerational perspective with the inclusion of exceptional youth performer Georgie Sachs Warren. Resoundingly well received, Earthfall National Tour 2026 follows standing ovations & sell out premieres.

Showcasing outstanding Irish and international contemporary and cultural dancers, Earthfall is at once an explosive celebration of cultural diversity and a heart wrenching reflection on the consequences of borders and inhumane immigration policies.

With outstanding group and solo performances from dancers Josué Reis (Ire & Brazil), Cynthia Siberry (Ire & Zimbabwe), Gaelin Little (UK), circus/aerialist Robin Cara (Ire), and youth performer Georgie Sachs Warren, Earthfall brings passionate expressions of joy, frustration, connection and isolation, through a tapestry of high energy cultural and contemporary dance, and circus.

The Story

Trapped in a Kafkaesque realm of incomprehensible rules, with boundaries and schedules that change without rhyme or reason, four people explore how to survive an endless limbo. A young girl is watching. How much of what she witnesses are her own nightmares and how much reality?

Together they find pathways that lead them deeper into the restricting maze until their connection to each other brings strength to bend rules and break walls.
