Today I visited a few Agri Evolve farms, where we got to see their shade tree initiatives. Agri Evolve cultivates over 130,000 native tree seedlings in their nurseries each year, providing them to farmers to create healthier growing conditions for coffee plants while also helping combat deforestation.

To support the long-term sustainability of coffee farming, Agri Evolve also provides SL14 and SL28 coffee seedlings to farmers, encouraging the replacement of older, lower-yielding trees with more productive and disease-resistant varieties, by building communal coffee nurseries.

One of the highlights was getting to meet a women’s cooperative as they collect their shade trees from the nursery. The women were beautifully dressed, and the energy was one of excitement and gratitude. They welcomed us with local song and dance to thank us for coming and buying their coffee. I had a serious lump in my throat the whole time, witnessing first hand how lives are being transformed with proper leadership and initiative.

It was the highlight of my time in Uganda 🇺🇬 and an event I will never forget. I have fallen deeply in love with this remote Mountain community, with their coffee, and with their hospitality and spirit. Against all the odds they are determined to move forward. To make lives better for their children and their community. Collectively. There is so so much we could learn from them.

I will have coffee for sale from Uganda 🇺🇬 and the communities in the Rwenzori mountains from September. It’s one I am super proud to feature.

Origin Trip Day 3 - travels to Uganda 🇺🇬 We climbed the Rwenzori Mountains 🏔️ today, up to a peak of between 1900 and 2000masl. Somewhere between losing my breath for the fifth time and staring at endless rows of coffee trees hanging onto the mountainside, something inside me shifted.

I kept thinking about how I was struggling to climb a mountain, while little children passed me carrying their siblings on their backs, huge scarves full of things balanced with a strength that felt almost unreal. Everything is carried up and down the mountain. Water, supplies, firewood, building materials. It humbled me in ways I can’t explain. The way they giggled at my out-of-breath and sweaty face made me feel happy though, catch my breath and carry on.

And then there was Collins, our guide, who turned every step into a lesson. Soil, coffee, survival, resilience, the quiet determination of farmers trying to build better futures for themselves and their communities from steep land and unpredictable weather. I learned more in those hours than I ever expected to.

At the top, the rain found us before we could make our way back down. We hid in a tiny hen house with fried bread and juice, surrounded by laughing children and the sound of rain hitting the roof while the Rwenzoris disappeared into the mist.
The mountains taught me that beauty and hardship can exist in the exact same place.
And somehow, that makes the beauty even greater. And people from Rwenzoris are resilient, welcoming, beautiful inside and out despite their daily struggles.

Uganda 🇺🇬 origin trip - Day 2 (Part one) Here is some context about Uganda to give you some context. Uganda 🇺🇬 is located on the equator, in East Africa with a growing population that of 50 million, and one of the poorest countries in the world. 50% of its young population are under the age 14. Statisticians have calculated the living wage for an Ugandan household to be approx 3.3m schillings for families to afford healthcare, school fees and daily food provisions. Unfortunately less the 3% actually achieve this. The scale of need is overwhelming as the economy fails to keep up with the growing population. Museveni, the current head of State has been in power since 1986 🫣 It is against this backdrop, that Agri Evolve operate. Opened in 2015, they are essentially a family business with a full time team of 140, and the largest employer in the Rwenzori Mountains. They are one of the only B Corp certified businesses in Uganda working directly with more then 20,000 farming families improving income and raising the quality of life for remote mountain communities. The average size of a coffee farm here is between 1-2 acres.

Origin trip Day 1 - travels to Uganda 🇺🇬.

Arrived early morning after travelling for 24hrs to what feels like another world 🌍 The air is heavy, the light is golden grey, like morning and evening exist at the same time. Fruit 🍈 that actually tastes like something - intense, real, delicious and overwhelming. And apparently…24 types of banana exist. 24 🤷‍♂️! I didn’t even know that was a thing. It makes you realise how small your version of “normal” really is.

Almost hurts to see the reality of life here. Women carry heavy loads, kids who should be in school selling fruit at the side of the road, whilst others carry their younger sibling on their back, playing outside in the dust. No mobile screens, no distractions. Life for them happens exclusively outside.

Uganda 🇺🇬 feels unlike anything I’ve known before. Raw, layered, hard and beautiful at the same time. It’s a lot to take in - the contrasts, the energy, the unfamiliarity of it all. But maybe that’s the point. To feel it fully, even when it’s overwhelming.

*** COLOMBIA 🇨🇴 *** is back in stock This is the second year we have featured this regional lot from and our friends .coffee & it’s a coffee that is close to our hearts ♥️ having visited the beautiful village of Santaurio, high in the mountains 🏔️ of Risaralda department back in 2024. The area is well known for its production by of high quality arabica coffee ☕️ Its range of high altitudes and rich volcanic soil make this region ideal. The cooperative behind this regional blend provide stable incomes for the many producers who contribute their coffees to this lot, with both mentoring and educational training in place to improve quality and improving producer’s livelihoods. Expect notes of milk chocolate and rich red berry forest fruit 🍇 Sweet and smooth.
