How are small businesses supposed to survive this?

This year alone I have had to close the Leixlip cafe six times because of water outages and Maynooth twice.

Today in Leixlip we were without water for several hours. This comes just days after we had to close early on Sunday because of the same issue.

And four hours into today’s outage, I still hadn’t received a single alert or meaningful update from Uisce Éireann.

For a cafe, no water means NO BUSINESS. We can’t prepare food, wash dishes, clean hands, or operate safely adhering to the food safety regulations.

Every closure means lost revenue that we can never get back.

To put it into perspective the money I’ve lost this year could have paid for:
• A part-time staff member every weekend
• The new dishwasher we desperately need
• New front-of-house lighting for Leixlip
• A desperately needed new oven for our Maynooth cafe
• Or, perhaps most importantly, the financial safety cushion every small business needs to survive another difficult year.

We are constantly told that small businesses need to be resilient and plan ahead.

How are we supposed to plan for something completely outside our control when we can’t even rely on the water supply?

And here’s the part that really sums it up:

While I have lost thousands in revenue this year because of repeated water outages, Uisce Éireann sent me a reminder today that I owe them €189.20

You honestly couldn’t make it up.

I understand that infrastructure fails. What I don’t understand is the lack of communication, transparency and accountability around these repeated outages.

We don’t need another temporary fix.

We need a permanent solution and a proactive plan for Leixlip, Maynooth and the surrounding areas.

This Sunday marks 9 years since we opened our doors for the very first time.
9 years of early mornings, busy weekends, endless coffees, birthday cakes, brunches, celebrations, tears, laughter, and more dishes than I care to count!
What started as a little dream has grown into something I’m incredibly proud of — and it’s all because of the amazing people who have walked through our doors over the past 9 years.
To every customer who has had a coffee, brought a friend, celebrated a birthday, ordered a cake, grabbed lunch, recommended us to someone or simply popped in to say hello…

👩‍🍳 Chef Wanted!

We’re looking for a full-time chef to join our busy little café crew!

Think daytime shifts (yep, no late nights 🙌), cooking everything from scratch, and working with really nice seasonal ingredients. Our menus change regularly and we love when the team gets involved with ideas.

It’s a fun, friendly spot but it does get busy, so you’ll need to be comfortable in a fast-paced kitchen and enjoy being part of a team.

You’ll need:
• At least 2 years’ experience including service
• A genuine love of good food
• A positive attitude and good energy
