We’re surrounded by the sea here in Galway, and it has long been a source of inspiration for artists.

Clodagh Wade looks at the coast from a closer perspective, drawn to the small details found along Galway’s shoreline: rock pools, sea plants, shells, stones and the traces of life at the water’s edge.

Clodagh explores the wonder of the sea and coastline through watercolour and mixed media on clay board. This smooth, absorbent surface allows for experimental techniques in painting, drawing and etching, creating contrast, texture and fine detail. A finishing layer of cold wax accentuates the colours and gives each work a distinctive finish.

“My most recent work focusses on spontaneity and experimentation, allowing intuition and subliminal knowledge to guide the process and create the unexpected. I’m doing so because I seek to produce a semblance of what I love about Galway’s seaside”.

A 100% Separavi from Pheasant’s Tears is certainly not shy. Headonistic blackberry fruit and rustic tannins are lifted by bright, fresh acidity with a great mineral edge on the finish.

Today is National Orange W**e Day and it feels like a good excuse to shine a light on one of our favourite styles of w**e.

Orange w**e is one of the most ancient styles of w**emaking. It is made by leaving the grape skins in contact with the juice, which develops texture, structure and a little more depth.

And these are some of our favourite orange w**es currently on the menu at Daróg.

Ash die-back has caused a lot of damage across our countyside but I try to capture the beauty and poignancy of what is left behind. ‘Duchess’ is the title of this mixed-media work on wood which you can enjoy Daróg W**e Bar until early November. The wonderful Edel McMahon will interview me along with fellow artist Clodagh Wade at a special Le Chéile event on Monday 19th Oct. Tickets at link in bio.

Between Two Worlds: A Samhain W**e Tasting & Storytelling at Daróg

As the harvest comes to an end and winter begins, Samhain marks a time of transition, a threshold between seasons and, traditionally, between this world and the Otherworld.

Join us at Daróg for an evening of w**e, cheese and Celtic storytelling. Sommelier Zsolt Lukács will lead a tasting of five w**es chosen for the evening, accompanied by
a cheese board, while master storyteller Rab Fulton, from ‘Celtic Tales’, shares tales rooted in folklore and the traditions of Samhain.

The Irish name for the event, Idir an Dá Shaol, means “Between Two Worlds”, reflecting the traditional idea of Samhain as a time when the boundary between this world and the Otherworld was at its thinnest.

Through w**e, storytelling and the traditions of the harvest, the evening will explore this time of seasonal change and the stories that have surrounded it for generations.
