🍵 Not all matcha tastes the same! Differences in climate, tea plant variety and processing techniques can lead to a wide spectrum of flavor profiles. This is a flavor wheel we find helpful when evaluating the flavor of a matcha.

First, start with the most basic layer, closest to the center and branch out from there. Once you’ve identified a vegetal, toasted or sweet taste characteristic, try to narrow it down to a more specific category. Finally, you can begin to pinpoint the exact tasting note as you sip your matcha.

The best way to built up your palate for premium matcha is by trying a few different ones side by side and comparing the flavors. That’s why we created our matcha samplers, which include our favorite matcha teas from small farmers all around Japan. They come from different regions and tea plant varieties, so each one has a slightly different flavor. Try them all, and see which one is your favorite! Just click the link in our bio 📖🔗

🌿 Have you ever wondered where matcha comes from?

📜 7th Century – Tang Dynasty (China)� Tea was first pressed into cakes in Southern China to make it easier to transport. This early powdered tea is considered the ancestor of matcha.

⛩️ 8th Century – The Temples of Nara (Japan)� Buddhist monks traveling to China brought powdered tea back to Japan, where it became part of meditation and temple life. Over time, Japan refined and perfected the tradition into what we now know as matcha 🍵✨
