The first performance of Handel's oratorio Messiah took place at Fishamble Street Music hall Dublin on April 13th 1742. It had been established by Neale, a music publisher across the road at Christchurch Yard. For the performance women were requested not to wear hooped dresses and men were requested to remove their swords in order to maximize capacity. It was a charity performance for the benefit of hospitals and those in debtor prisons. Handel had spent time in Dublin since November and stayed in Abbey Street.

Lunch with my daughter Ada at the chorus cafe Fishamble Street. Tomorrow is the anniversary of the first official performance of Handel's Messiah in 1742 on this very site of the musical hall that stood there.
Close also to the Wood Quay Civic offices which stand on the site of the excavations that uncovered the viking past of the city but turned out a farcical decision to build over the site.
