Last Friday, our Head Chef Frank Madden retired. These words probably won’t sit well with him, as he’s the quintessential back-room person, never one to seek the limelight. But things need to be said, Frank!

Frank and I go back a long way; it’s been 28 years in total that we’ve worked together. That time speaks to the trust and respect we’ve shared.

Frank has always been professional, creative & diligent in his position as head chef, so when Brendan and I were planning EK ten years ago, we knew there was only one person for the role - Frank Madden.  He became not just head chef, but the bedrock foundation of the kitchen team. He took charge of the myriad of details needed to run a kitchen, but more than that brought a calmness to what can become a very fast moving and pressurised environment.

I’ve learned a lot from him, especially the value of pausing when things get overwhelming. He’s always been there to support me, and for that I’m truly thankful.

Beyond the work, though, are all the memories of the banter and laughter, his quiet strength and friendship. For Brendan, myself, the EK team, and many of our wonderful suppliers and customers who've known him, we’ll miss you. Thank you for being you, a true friend to all of us.

Every morning at 7am, like clockwork, Frank would come downstairs, be handed his cup of tea by the barista, and quietly get on with the day. Now, in retirement, his wife Maureen can hand him that same 7am tea—and with no more excuses about being too busy, the grass will finally get cut!

Its time now to put your feet up and enjoy your retirement, your beautiful family and life in general.

A day of mixed emotions as we close for the break; Angela, part of the heart of the EK kitchen is leaving us. She is leaving to follow her dreams; we wish her every success in making those dreams come true. She joined the team ten years ago, a few months after we opened. We knew almost immediately she would be an incredible asset to our new venture, but what we didn’t know then was how much she would impact our journey through the last ten years.

Ange, as we call her, is so creative and always loves to try new recipes with such enthusiasm. She was largely responsible for all the salads we produce on a daily basis, but there was so much more to Ange. She loved to bake, made fabulous homemade soups, took charge of the hot section when called on, trained team members on a daily basis and on many occasions was your barista out front.

Ange has given so much to EK over the years and both Brendan and I cannot thank her enough. We and all the team will miss her so much, she is one of the most loyal & funniest people I have ever worked with, her smile lights up any room. I’ve been so lucky to have you as my right-hand-woman for so long.

You will always be part of our little family at EK

We’re 10 today! This day ten years ago, we opened our doors for the first time. The vision was simple enough: to serve tasty, freshly prepared food in a friendly environment that welcomed all.

It’s been tough at times, but made a lot easier and enjoyable by the team we’ve had around us over the years; they’re an incredible bunch of people we’ve been so lucky to have. A huge thank you to all of them, past and present.

Sourcing locally means building up a network of suppliers, all of whom have given us fantastic support over the years. We owe a huge amount to them, especially Derek from (all our meat), Ermal and Andy at (fruit & veg), Brock and team at (coffee), all at (milk), (bread) and (juice) and many others over the years. Thanks to you all! A very special thank you to Berni from Casa Home in Glasthule for the amazing window displays.

But most of all, we’d like to thank you, the customers. It really is a genuine pleasure to serve you, and we are so grateful for the support over the years. Thank you so, so, much!

Finally, please continue to support not just us, but all the smaller, independent local food businesses in these challenging times.
