Part 2 | Mairead & Brendan's Garden Layout 🌿

Today I'm walking you through the layout we've designed for Mairead and Brendan's new-build three-bed semi-D in Celbridge, Co. Kildare.

Every decision has a purpose.
We're making the most of the south-west aspect by extending the patio to enjoy more evening sun, reshaping the lawn, introducing dog-friendly planting, creating a dedicated wellness area, and adding smart storage without taking over the garden.

A good garden isn't just about how it looks. It's about how you live in it.

Part 1 | Mairead & Brendan's Garden Transformation 🌿

Today I'm in Mairead and Brendan's garden in Celbridge, Co. Kildare.

They've recently moved into a new-build three-bed semi-D with a south-facing garden. Like so many homeowners, they've had contractors out, received several quotes and even worked with a garden designer.

The problem?
The quotes aren't always easy to compare. One might include drainage, another doesn't. One includes topsoil, another assumes it's already there.
You're not always comparing like for like.

This is the start of their garden journey, and I'll be sharing the process from an empty new-build garden to a space designed around how they actually want to live.

Most patios end up at the back door because that's where the house finishes.

Access for Everyone

This medical centre in Churchtown, Dublin, is a great example of how good outdoor design improves both appearance and accessibility.

Wide steps, a gentle access ramp, a handrail, subtle lighting, low-maintenance planting, and even space for two cars all come together to create an entrance that's practical, modern, and welcoming.

Whether it's a medical centre or your own home, these simple design ideas make life easier for wheelchair users, parents with buggies, anyone recovering from an injury, and as we get older.

The best outdoor spaces don't just look good. They work for everyone.

Can You Beat Bindweed?

Bindweed is one of the most persistent weeds you'll ever come across. If you've battled it, you'll know it has a habit of coming back, even after you've pulled it, dug it out, or treated it.

Over the years, I've tried a range of approaches, including removing contaminated soil from raised beds. One thing I've learned is that bindweed is rarely a one-time fix. It takes ongoing management and persistence.
Keep removing new growth, dig out roots where possible, and remember that it may not even be originating in your own garden. It can spread from neighbouring ground or beneath walls.

If you're dealing with bindweed, don't be discouraged. Stay consistent, and you'll give yourself the best chance of keeping it under control.

This wall gets more attention than anything else in the garden.

Built by hand from reclaimed Irish sandstone, originally from an old farm building.

I've never power washed it, cleaned it, or treated it.
The corten steel fireplace beside it is exactly the same. Zero maintenance, yet it's been used for everything from pizza nights to sitting outside in January.
One focal point. The whole garden is built around it.

Good steps do more than connect different levels.

 They can improve access, create zones, and make a garden feel more natural to move through.

Riser height, tread depth, and overall width all play a part.

 

Where possible, I like to make steps wider and deeper than standard for a more comfortable feel.
