Blackbush lane, off the Dublin Rd., opposite the Boyne Valley Hotel is a great place to go walking any time of year but in particular now with all the wild flowers and plants in full bloom. Thanks to the land owner when you walk along the edge of the fields you can walk all around by the rugby field and right across to the roundabout at Bryanstown. This evenings walk with the children was an eye opener as to how many beautiful wild flowers are growing all along the lane way. If you like taking photos you should take a walk up there.

About four miles outside Drogheda, heading towards Slane, past Townley Hall and on the south side of the beautiful river Boyne is Dowth. As you drive up the lane way to the old church ruin and graveyard you feel like you are going back in time to the unspoiled countryside which hasn't changed in hundreds of years. The mound at Dowth gives a wonderful view of the Boyne Valley. There are two caves beneath the mound, once easily entered but now padlocked. I love to wander around the hilltop and think about the Legend of the unfortunate Piper who entered the cave never to be seen again. Legend has it that he still makes himself heard from beneath the dark earth, for as far away as the woods and along by the river he can still be heard playing 'The Rakes of Mallow' on his pipes

A GATHERING EVENT
DROGHEDA FENIANS RETURN
JULY 4TH – JULY 14TH 2013
“The Fenians” was the popular name for a mass political movement called The Fenian Brotherhood or The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) which flourished in Ireland and among the Irish in America and Britain in the second half of the 19th century. It was a radical movement which aimed at an independent Ireland with votes for all and a nationalisation of agricultural land. Its widespread support came mainly from working people, craftsmen, small manufacturers, peasant farmers and radical intellectuals and artists. Since it advocated complete separation of Church and State its membership included both Protestant and Catholic. In Drogheda they included some of the brightest and the best of the population and the fact that many of them had to leave after 1867 was a great loss to the life of the town.
After the abortive 1867 Fenian Rising most of the Drogheda Fenians had to flee the country and subsequently many of them played prominent roles in the lives of their adopted countries – mainly the U.S.A, Canada, Australia and Britain. Over the years descendants of these exiles have contacted the Drogheda Museum as they trace their genealogies and, mainly through the labours of our Community Historian Brendan Matthews, we have been able to piece together the dramatic stories of their ancestors. We are inviting the descendants of the Drogheda Fenians, their extended families and friends and indeed, anybody who is interested, to a series of events in Drogheda from Thurs 4th to Sunday the 14th of July 2013.

As the wonderful weekend comes to a close with the Tall Ships departing on Bank Holiday Monday morning from Drogheda Port, the busy Drogheda Arts Festival comes to a relaxing close on the Banks of the Boyne.
Just 5km from Drogheda town centre is Beaulieu (pronounced Bewly) House & Garden, one of the earliest examples in Ireland of an unfortified mansion, and tomorrow afternoon (Monday 6 May), Drogheda Arts Festival hosts its closing events in the Chapel, on the lawn, in the garden, and in the house.

This free event begins at 2.00pm with five short classical and traditional Irish music performances in the Chapel (listen for the bell for the next performance), on-going children’s events on the lawn including Fly to the Sky Workshops at 2.00pm and 3.30pm, with performances in the garden following that; together with Fun and Frolics, Come Over and Join In with a giant snail, caterpillar, and other creatures, an obstacle course, car kart track, and a monster egg and spoon.

Up at the house there is plenty of Ooh la la! with two performances from Monsieur Gusto the most amazing juggling escapologist you have never seen at 2.30pm and 4.00pm.

Face painters Hannah and Emily work their magic on the faces of your children for free!

And if you’ve never taken the tour of this unique house, Noel Bailey is giving two short taster tours of the house, walled garden and car collection at 3.00pm and 4.00pm.

The afternoon is completely free, except for car parking which is accessed in the lower field for €4. Remember, the main gate to the house will be closed, except for those with accessible (wheelchair etc.) needs.

Tom Cruise discovers his family history of knights, rebels and heroes on visit to Dublin.

Tom Cruise discovered that his Irish ancestors have been identified as knights, rebels and heroes in a family history that stretches back 800 years, according to Tourism Ireland.

The Hollywood actor and producer was in Dublin on the European leg of his tour to promote the Universal Pictures film 'Oblivion'.

Research commissioned by Tourism Ireland for Cruise's visit, and completed by genealogy researchers Eneclann, has unveiled the history of a family that contained knights in the 12th century, rebels in the 17th century and a hero – Patrick Russell-Cruise – who reinstated tenants on his lands in the 19th century, following their eviction against his wishes by an unscrupulous land agent. Cruise is a fifth generation direct descendant of Patrick Russell-Cruise.

Prior to the red carpet première of 'Oblivion' in Dublin, Cruise was presented with a Certificate of Irish Heritage by the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Eamon Gilmore TD.

The certificate is an official recognition by the Irish Government of those who are proud of their Irish ancestry and heritage.

“It's a great honour for me and for my whole family – I can't wait to bring it back to them and enlighten them on their history," said Cruise.

“I'm very proud to be Irish. There's a pride in America of being Irish. I can't wait to come back and I want to visit the land of my ancestors and the castle that they had."
