In a world that is constantly ‘on demand’, when you can get a Christmas dinner 365 days of the year, when you can buy strawberries in January that look and smell like strawberries but taste of nothing, we have sacrificed seasonal eating for convenience and lost so much in the process. (Pun intended!)
When you can buy whatever food you want at any time of year we loose the excitement of tasting that first sweet cherry tomato to ripen in the summer sunshine or the crispness of an apple plucked from the boughs in autumn.
Some things have a very short season as is the case with wild garlic. It appears in early spring and depending on weather conditions may only be around for about 6 weeks. Every year it feels like awaiting an old friend, excited to welcome it back.
Wild garlic pesto is such a taste of spring and early summer and each year for a limited time we have ‘ the wild one’ toastie on our menu. It’s not around for too long so come and try one while you can!
