Happy Day 💚

Some places don’t just show you Donegal’s beauty - they show you its history. Grianán of Aileach is one of them.

This stone ringfort has stood on Greenan Mountain for over a thousand years. Legend says St Patrick came here to baptise the chieftain Eoghan, giving Inishowen its name. Local lore even tells of sleeping heroes resting beneath the hill, waiting to be called again.

Climb the walls today and it’s easy to see why this place is special - The glistening waters of Lough Foyle and Lough Swilly are clear, as is the form of the entire peninsula. A windy and exposed place, Grianán has been a silent witness to the history of Ireland.
