We hand shear our sheep and hand cut their hooves using no electric shears, chemical dips or chemical sprays just a home brew of garlic & peppermint spray with a bit of Stockholm tar if needed in the summer to deter fly strike and keep our meats chemical free, healthy and delicious.
Rooted in centuries of farming heritage, this slow, precise method protects the animal's delicate skin and prevents summer overheating.
Given that this takes time and a lot of work it helps to keep our flock small and easy to handle.
We've very near plans to introduce Easy Care sheep to the farm, this breed sheds their own wool, lambing is easier and foot care is less, allowing us to increase our flock and reduce our workload slightly.
Meanwhile our ladies are keeping cool with their pedicures and we're using their wool to suppress weeds in the orchard.

Big Red is a first time Mammy and doing great. Her natural instincts are incredible.
She was born and reared on our farm so she's calm, stress free and unbothered by Pablo, but best left in peace to rest and feed her babies, much to Pablo's disgust.

We love to see Lady Bugs on the farm, they're great for natural pest control because they eat thousands of soft-bodied garden pests, like aphids and mites over their lifetimes. They reduce the need for toxic chemical sprays, animal dips and they help to protect soil and water, keeping garden ecosystems safe for helpful pollinators like bees.
So if you see one, protect it or just simply leave it be.

Betty and family ( and farmers) chilling in the wild paddock once jobs are done beats Netflix any day of the week and we're getting the piglets used to human handling while Mama Betty takes a nap. She's cool with our presence and trusts us with her babies so she just nodded off and snored to her hearts content

A pig's nose is truly brilliant, functioning as a super-powered scent detector, a heavy-duty shovel, and a delicate touch sensor all at once.
Pigs have over 1,100 smell receptor genes, compared to humans who only have about 400.
Their sense of smell is roughly 2,000 times more sensitive than a human's, and they can detect scents up to 7 miles away.They can spot food, like truffles or roots, buried up to 3 feet (nearly a metre) beneath the ground.
Betty here, in particular loves her food, and a good rummage through the soil for roots and grasses, this is her natural diet, keeping her body and brain healthy.

Mamma pigs Pip and Betty and all their babies are now sharing a huge fresh paddock and it seems that they're loving it and each other!
This paddock was rested for several months and is now full of roots, wild flowers and various grass species ( and plenty of rush) which the pigs can eat turn over, shelter and shade in.
They snuggle with their Mammy pig in separate shelters at night but spend much of the day playing or resting with one another outside.
They're free to run around, play, sleep, feed and forage. This is what free range pig farming looks like.

Poor Pip our Mammy pig is having a bita bother feeding one of her babies, he is the 'runt' it seems and his bigger brothers n sisters are too strong for him to compete.
The "runt" of a pig litter is the smallest and weakest piglet, typically weighing less than 0.9 to 1.1 kg at birth. Because of their size, they are born with fewer energy reserves and struggle to compete with their larger siblings for milk and space at the mother's udder.
So rather than let this little cutie deteriorate more we're substituting with regular bottle feeds as well as some of his Mammy's milk, and he's getting very spoiled with regular feeds and cuddles.

In most piggeries / factory farms the runt would be left to die or removed and euthanized.
