As people enjoy the October Bank Holiday weekend, Water Safety Ireland is reminding everyone that alcohol and water are a dangerous combination.

Whether you're walking along the coast, fishing, boating, swimming or spending time near rivers and lakes, avoid drinking alcohol before or during water-based activities.

❌ Alcohol affects judgement, balance and reaction times
❌ It increases the risk of slips, trips and falls near the water
❌ It can impair your ability to recognise danger and respond in an emergency
❌ It increases the risk of drowning

✅ If you're planning activities on or near the water, save the drinks for afterwards in a safe environment.

Remember, cold water, strong currents, rough weather and alcohol can be a deadly combination.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Look out for friends and family, and never encourage anyone under the influence of alcohol to enter the water or take part in water-based activities.

🚨 If you see someone in difficulty in or near the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

This Bank Holiday weekend, make good decisions, look after each other and Respect the Water.
