Irish firefighter and poet Gerard Devine takes us back to one of Dublin’s most extraordinary historical events the Great Wh***ey Fire of 1875.

On 18 June 1875, burning wh***ey flowed through the streets of Dublin’s Liberties, threatening homes, businesses and the Coombe.

With water proving ineffective and the burning alcohol spreading through the streets, Dublin’s firefighters had to think outside the box. In an extraordinary act of quick thinking, they used horse manure mixed with ash and waste from nearby tanneries to create barriers, helping stop the burning wh***ey from spreading further.

Gerard brings this remarkable piece of Dublin history to life before finishing with a fantastic poem about the disaster.

A fascinating story of Dublin’s past, the bravery of its firefighters and the ingenuity that helped protect the city.

Thanks, Gerard, for sharing your knowledge and talent with The Story Snug Ireland!

From 15 years of he**in addiction to earning a PhD in Psychology and Neuroscience Dr Brian Pennie’s story is proof that change is possible. ❤️

We were honoured to welcome Brian onto The Story Snug Ireland to hear his incredible journey from addiction to recovery, education and helping others.

But what stood out most was the man himself a genuine, humble gentleman who makes you feel completely at ease.

Brian, thank you for sharing your story with us. You never know who might need to hear it. Your past doesn’t have to define your future.
