The second round of Translating Glodok Vol. II: Sketch last Sunday began at the legendary foodcourt of Gedung Chandra, where inspiration struck Debora Yuza | Food Illustrator and led her to create her first exhibition, HABIS // SISA, back in July 2025.

Our journey continued as we walked and shopped around Petak Sembilan, immersing ourselves in the hustle and bustle of the wet market in the morning. Along the way, participants picked an object that caught their attention and brought it back to sketch at MET Glodok.

A morning of looking closely, drawing freely, and giving ourselves the permission to play. Thank you to everyone who participated! ✨

Join us for a public screening of MET Glodok’s second documentary, 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲.

The film captures the team on a weekday as they attempt to record, cherish, and honor the ever-changing neighbourhood: its remarkable past, its lively present, and the futures currently taking shape within it. It tells a story that resists forgetting—a neighborhood, its inhabitants, and the everyday moments that shape their lives.

Translating Glodok is a program by MET Glodok that invites creatives to interpret Glodok through different mediums and sensory approaches, uncovering new ways of seeing, recording, and understanding the neighborhood.

For our second edition, 𝗩𝗼𝗹. 𝟬𝟮: 𝗦𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵, artists Nugraha Pratama, Debora Yuza | Food Illustrator, and Ardzuna Sinaga will lead a series of mentor-guided sketch walks across the neighborhood. Each program begins with a walking observation and sketch experience around Glodok, guided by your chosen mentor, followed by a sharing session and refreshments at MET Glodok.

Together, these workshops explore sketching as more than a drawing practice—they invite participants to slow down, pay attention, and make sense of a place through wonder, play, and imagination.

Celebrating Jakarta’s 499th anniversary, this special edition of 𝗝𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗥𝗮𝘀𝗮 invites you to trace how the history of trade between the Dutch and Chinese forged the Glodok we know today.

Beginning in present-day Jakarta’s Chinatown and ending in the former heart of colonial Batavia, this walking tour follows the intertwined histories of trade, migration, and community life. Together, we will follow the canals that once connected merchants and markets, uncover the institutions that held community life together, and encounter figures whose lives became intertwined with the city’s history.

The walk concludes with a family-style luncheon at Babah Koffie Kawisari by House of Tugu, where we gather to taste how centuries of Chinese Indonesian history continue to live on through food.

Glodok: Beyond Chinatown is our way of inviting you to see this neighborhood the way we do. Through its temples, alleys, markets, and the everyday life of the people who call it home. No tourist script — just honest, local storytelling from our team who genuinely loves this place.

As a framework, Translating Glodok extends beyond image-making, where research becomes collective and translation a shared act. Through the exchange between mentors and participants, the project generates new ways of constructing memory and articulating narratives of Glodok from within.
As we continue this journey, we remain open to new ways of translating the neighborhood. We look forward to welcoming more voices and perspectives as Glodok continues to be translated into languages uniquely our own.

Translating Glodok is a new program by MET Glodok that invites creatives to interpret Glodok’s through different medium and sensory approaches, gathering new ways of seeing, recording, and understanding the neighbourhood.

For its first edition, 𝗩𝗼𝗹. 𝟬𝟭: 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁, photographers .it, , and will lead a series of mentor-guided photo walks through the neighbourhood. Each session concludes with a curation and sharing session at MET Glodok, where selected images from the walk are compiled into a black-and-white risograph postcard set for participants to take home.

Through this workshop, we invite you to encounter and read Glodok anew—not simply as a place to photograph, but as a living text where fragments of space, everyday life, and memory are brought together through images and shared reflection.
