😥 Why are medium-sized coffee businesses struggling?

Coffee shops of every size are under pressure. Green coffee prices broke records in 2025, and analysts now describe a “new normal” of high prices and deep volatility expected to last at least two more years.

Rising rents, energy costs, and persistent labour shortages have thinned margins across the sector to their lowest in years.

But struggles are not shared equally. Medium-sized coffee businesses, typically those running between a handful of sites and a few dozen, are taking the hardest hit.

This is the kind of meme that perfectly captures modern corporate life: sometimes your job isn’t to contribute—it’s just to exist in the room like emotional office furniture.

What makes this so good is the tiny kid’s expression. They’re clearly wondering why they’re attached to this situation, while physically being unable to leave. It genuinely looks like someone who has already accepted that the next hour will be spent listening to people debate problems they’ve never even heard of.

The part that really sells it is that every office worker has been this toddler at least once. You don’t speak. You don’t get asked anything. You don’t even know what half the acronyms mean. But the second you try to skip the meeting, suddenly your attendance becomes “important.”

This is where it stops being a meme and starts becoming corporate mythology. Somewhere, every company has a meeting where one person exists purely to nod occasionally so nobody asks why they weren’t invited. The internet has quietly accepted this as a universal law of employment.

In ten years, workplace historians will probably call this “cross-functional collaboration.” The rest of us will remember it as being professionally held hostage by a calendar invite. 😭💼🪑
