A little mid-week sonic history.

Nearly a decade before the archipelago’s fusion boom, an Indonesian supergroup consisting of Jack Lesmana, Bubi Chen, Benny Mustafa, Maryono, Kiboud Maulana, and Jopie Chen went into a West German studio to challenge the boundaries of jazz.

The result was Djanger Bali — a beautiful collision where traditional Indonesian pentatonic melodies meet jazz’s diatonic scale.
