The shortest public transport ride in the world lasts less than a minute and covers a distance of exactly 66 meters.
The Zagreb Funicular is not just a tourist attraction; it is a living witness to time that has reliably connected the Lower and Upper Towns for decades. If you step into Tomić Street from Ilica, you will find the lower station of this historic mode of transport. Only a brief ascent separates you from the upper station on the Strossmayer Promenade, directly beneath the Lotrščak Tower, where one of the finest views of Zagreb's rooftops awaits. 😍
Its story began on October 8, 1890, when it officially entered trial operation, while regular passenger service started on April 23, 1893. Interestingly, the funicular was originally powered by steam. The old steam engine was finally replaced by an electric motor in 1934, yet the funicular has retained its original appearance and construction to this day, rightfully holding the title of the shortest public funicular railway in the world.
When visiting Zagreb, a ride in this blue carriage is an experience you should not miss. It is the perfect starting point for an afternoon exploring the historic center, an open-air museum in its own right, and an opportunity to slow your pace for a moment.
At Hotel Magdalena, we believe that the best way to get to know any city is through its authentic stories and traditions. After exploring the streets of Zagreb, allow yourself a well-deserved rest, and let us make sure you feel right at home during your stay. 🥰
