With their beauty, àrie da nuòto seem to slow down time, quietly speaking of the rich musical heritage of Rovinj.
🎶 Under the rule of the Venetian Republic for a long time, and later the Kingdom of Italy, Rovinj was strongly connected to Italian culture, which still defines its cultural, and especially musical, heritage today. Present-day Italian Community is the guardian of a rich tradition of folk music, particularly represented by various forms of vocal polyphony: bitinàde, butunàde, àrie da cuntràde, and àrie da nuòto.
🎶 Among the various local forms of vocal polyphony, àrie da nuòto, or “night songs”, represent the most intimate and subtle genre. They carry traces of a distant past, from a time when sacred and secular music were closely interconnected.
