In old Dubrovnik, during weddings, feasts, and the Feast of Saint Blaise, huge pots of meat sauce were prepared to feed large gatherings. The first guests received the finest cuts of meat, while those arriving later were often served macaroni covered in the rich remaining sauce. These “stained” macaroni became known as Šporki Makaruli.

Today, this humble dish has become one of Dubrovnik’s most beloved culinary traditions, still enjoyed during family gatherings, celebrations, and special occasions throughout the city. 🍝
