Michael Armitage, Personal Thoughts (As***le), 2022, oil on Lubugo bark cloth

In this painting on Lubugo bark cloth with its rough texture and irregular gaps, Armitage pays homage to Kenyan mythology and the landscape of his homeland. The scene takes inspiration from the epic novel The Perfect Nine (2020) by the late Kenyan author Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o (1928-2025) who chronicles the founding of Kenya’s Gĩkũyũ people and the ideals of beauty, courage and unity. Thiong’o’s story blends folklore, mythology and allegory, and was a key inspiration for Armitage’s 2021–22 body of work featured in his celebrated solo exhibition ‘You, Who Are Still Alive’ Kunsthalle Basel

About his formation as a painter, Armitage has said that “ what is most important is that I’ve never felt a sense of hierarchy. I think it’s very easy within the history of art to feel a cultural hierarchy, and not having that is liberating. To take artists and work at face value – and learn about it afterwards – leaves a lot of space to be affected by things. I appreciate not having grown up being told: “These are the greatest things ever made and these are the greatest people who ever made them.” (Interview with Juliet Rix for Studio International, June 2021)

Simone Fattal, Man in the Desert, 2000, glazed stoneware, is currently on loan at the artist’s survey exhibition « Des villes au fond d’un lac » Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris bringing together some one hundred works and covering fifty years of Fattal’s practice, from early landscape paintings to ceramics and collages.

Man in the desert is a late example of Fattal’s ceramics, a medium the artist began exploring in 1988 after taking classes at the College of Marin and the San Francisco Art Institute. Out of clay emerged archaic anthropomorphic or animal figures that drew inspiration from the epics of the Mediterranean basin, especially Mesopotamia or Ancient Greece, from the Epic of Gilgamesh to Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey.

Simone Fattal is a Lebanese American artist born in Damascus, Syria, in 1942 and based in Paris.

For the latest issue of ArtAsiaPacific Annie Ochmanek sat down with Monique Burger and Olivia Shao, Burger Collection Curator The Drawing Center to discuss the upcoming exhibition “Form, Shadow, Motion: Selections from the Burger Collection,” opening Oct 22 at The Drawing Center New York, and travelling to Asia Society Hong Kong Center in March 2027 during Hong Kong art week.

For the latest issue of ArtAsiaPacific Inside Burger Collection, Hamburger Bahnhof - Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart curator Anna-Catharina Gebbers investigates the self-portraits of London-based painter Sang Woo Kim 김상우 Sang Woo Kim (b. 1994 in Seoul). A graduate of Central Saint Martins, London, Kim has become known for his intimately-scaled paintings, installations, and pigment dye transfers, that treat human eyes not merely as instruments of perception, but of projection, objectification, and empowerment.

“The reclamation of my own image through the act of painting,” says Kim, “is also a kind of interrogation of the self in general. I want my work to challenge and unsettle viewers - like looking into a mirror and seeing themselves through the lens of another’s fractured gaze.”

Kim’s work is currently on view at AMA Venezia in Venice, as part of the group show Aura (through Nov 22), including Arthur Jaffa, Brandon Morris, Laura Owens, Charles Ray, Ed Ruscha, Jenny Saville, Tino Segels, Richard Serra, Christopher Wool, and Joseph Yeager.

For the latest issue of Inside Burger Collection, Edward Gomez surveys the six-decade long career of Tadanori Yokoo one of Japan‘s most iconic artists and graphic designers. His first big survey show was staged at in 1972 where his radical postwar and anti-modernist designs were celebrated by an international audience.

Born in 1936 in the Kansai region of western Japan, Yokoo showed an early affinity for art, especially picture books and manga. After high school, Yokoo worked at a printing company and for a
newspaper in Kobe. Hired by an Osaka-based advertising firm, he was transferred to its Tokyo office, where, during the 1960s, he earned acclaim for the bold, radical imagery and content of his posters for underground theater troupes and films, as well as corporate clients. After seeing a Picasso exhibition in New York in 1980, Yokoo gave up graphic design and dedicated himself to painting. He remains a leading cultural figure in his homeland, and an iconic emblem of his generation of Japanese artists.

Congratulations to Marguerite Humeau for being short-listed for the 2026 Turner Prize 🎉

Marguerite Humeau, “Jean, an Elephant watching the scene with a sense of wonder”, 2016, polystyrene, white paint, nylon, powder-coated metal

This earlier sculpture was part of Humeau’s show FOXP2 and in 2016 and belongs to a series that speculates on the way elephants communicate with one another and how they engage in language games and herd rituals. In preparation for this work, Humeau contacted a number of zoologists, paleontologists, biologists, and psychologists, and asked them to imagine what might have been the evolution of elephants if, instead of humans, they had been able to use language. Known for her supernatural, biomorphic sculptures and drawings, Humeau often places her works in complex installations that engage archeological and scientific imaginaries.

Marguerite Humeau (b. 1986) lives and works in London and received her MA from the Royal College of Art, London, in 2011. She recently showed a new body of work in Ishøj, Denmark, and in Florida.

Zhang Xiaogang, Jump No. 5, 2021, oil on paper with paper collage

Jumping figures have been among the recurring subjects of Chinese artist Zhang Xiaogang’s recent paintings on canvas and paper: human figures appear to be suspended in solidified air, impervious to gravity’s pull, with the act of jumping offering a reflection on the ambiguity of human action and control. Known for his Big Family series, begun in the 1990s, Zhang’s deeply psychological paintings and drawings document the changes in Chinese society from its turbulent revolutionary past to its dynamic self-understanding in the new millennium.

Zhang Xiaogang (born 1958, Kunming) graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, Chongqing, in 1982. He lives and works in Chengdu and Beijing.
