If you're struggling with a place to take your better half this summer, Yakiniku Yama Oku offers a mix of dazzling Japanese barbeque with an enclosed, setting.

The name literally translates to “barbecue in the heart of the mountains”, and it's designed to envoke a pre-Meiji Shogunate atmosphere with an intimate hut-like design. Complete with whiskeys and hand-picked wagyu beef, it's an escape from the bustling Causeway Bay.

Standout dishes include the 14 days dry-aged loin shabu-shabu and the Nagatanien-made clay pot rice. But with so many variations on barbeque types and styles, it's worth mutliple visits.

The best designs are timeless: the wheel, the lightbulb, sliced bread, and traditional Hong Kong egg waffles. With such simplistic ingredients of egg, evaporated milk and sugar, this recipe has lasted almost a century, and is still widely enjoyed locally in the city today.

In this video, Aiden visits one of Hong Kong's flagship egg waffles stores, Master Low Key Food Shop, to showcase how this snack not only remains so popular, but is a nostalgic favourite for those who grew up here.
