Utz-iil Eco-Centro is a growing project that comes from the minds of Yeymi Sumoza and Anna Karina DeLage. The space will be centered around bringing young tz'utujil residents and travelers together to share culture. On the land where Yeymi and her family used to live, we are creating a space that includes a tea house, a Maya ceremonial altar, a kiosk with local textiles, four rooms for rent (including a kitchen space and bathroom), a temazcal, and a stage where local musicians will have the opportunity to come and share their work. On the land, the family is growing a number of fruits and vegetables in a permaculture dynamic. There will be additional areas where we will grow teas to serve to our customers. The best part of the project is that it will be a Guatemalan owned, run, and staffed space. Many of the businesses around Lake Atitlan are owned by foreigners. Supporting our business gives an unique experience to this Guatemalan family and those coming to enjoy. Creating the tea house and a compost toilet. We are excited by the progress and hoping to make stronger community alliances.
