Travelling with someone who doesn't eat meat? 🫒

You don't need to find a second restaurant for the evening.

A guest called lucinda left this on Google:
"Friendly service, delicious food plus vegetarian menu for one of our group"

These are the plates I point people to when they tell me at the table:

🫒 Cretan dakos
🫒 Greek dip platter: tzatziki, humus, eggplant salad, spicy cheese dip, pita
🫒 Pitaroudia, falafel Rhodian style with yogurt sauce
🫒 Milfei, grilled vegetables and halloumi
🫒 meli salad with rocket, halloumi, walnuts and pomegranate

Tell me when you sit down and I will explain what is in every plate.

Ask Antonis 🕯️

"One of us is not drinking tonight. Is there something nicer than a soft drink?"

A fair question. Whoever is driving back to the hotel deserves a proper glass too.

Yes. Ask me for the Moonlight Special. It is the non alcoholic cocktail on my menu and it is there exactly for this moment.

Everyone at the table should have something nice to raise.

What would you like to ask me before your visit? Write it in the comments and I will answer. Tonight we open at 17:30.

This is what the dolmades look like before you ever see them. 🫒

One big pot. Vine leaves rolled tight and packed in circles from the edge all the way to the middle.

On my menu they are written as "Dolmades homemade". That word is there for a reason: they are made here, in my kitchen, in pots like this one.

Order them as a starter and put the plate in the middle of the table. It is a dish made for sharing.

Most people meet my restaurant after dark. My door opens at 12:00.

Midday in the Old Town is a calmer meal. You sit down and take your time over a plate.

A guest wrote this on Google (translated from Polish):
"I highly recommend it, especially at lunchtime!"

I agree with him. 🌊

In August everyone looks for a cool table indoors. In September everyone wants to sit outside again.

That is the real change here. The stone stops throwing heat back at you around midday, the alley holds shade until the afternoon and the tables outside become usable at an hour when they were unthinkable three weeks ago.

We open at eleven, Monday to Saturday. Almost nobody knows that because for two months it did not matter.

It matters now. A plate of dips, a cold glass, a chair in the shadecand the Old Town going past you slowly.

Finish this for me: lunch in the Old Town is not complete without ______

Unpopular opinion from a man who sells a lot of moussaka: it is the wrong thing to order first.

Not because it is bad. Ours goes out all night and people write home about it. But it is heavy, it is rich and it arrives before your palate has met anything else. Half an hour later everything after it tastes like a footnote.

Eat it second. Or eat it on your last night when you already know what the rest of the menu can do.

Start with something sharp instead. Dakos with the tomato and capers cutting through. Or the dips, which are what the bread is for.

Tell me if I am wrong in the comments.

You can drink w**e from anywhere in the world tonight. On this island there is a better idea.

Cair is a Rhodes w**ery and a good part of my list comes from it. Rodos 2400 if you want a dry white. Maestro if you want to work through dry, semi dry, red and rose across a few evenings. Retsina if somebody at the table is feeling brave.

W**e tastes different when it was made near the food it is meant to sit next to. That is not romance. These things simply grew up together.

When you sit down, ask for the Rhodian one and tell me what you think.

Please enjoy responsibly.

Every table in here this summer belonged to somebody who could have gone anywhere else.

That is the part people in this trade forget. You were on an island with hundreds of restaurants, you had a small number of evenings and you spent one of them in a narrow alley with me. Thank you for that. I do not take it lightly.

Some of you I will remember by what you ordered. Some by the children. One family I will remember for the rest of my life.

If we got it right, do me one favour. Write a line on Google about what actually happened at your table. Not for the score. Because the next family standing at the top of this alley, deciding whether to walk down, will read it.

That is how this room fills. It always has been.

If tonight is your first night on Rhodes here is exactly what I would put in front of you.

Start with the Greek dip platter, four dips and pita, so the table has something to do while it settles.

Then the Pitaroudia because they are the only thing on my menu that genuinely comes from this island and you may not meet them again.

If there are two of you, the Meze for 2 and nothing else. If there are more, the Beef meli and the lamb kleftiko, in the middle, shared.

Finish with the baklava cheesecake and let the table argue about whether it counts as baklava.

Send this to whoever is deciding where you eat tonight.

Here is what happens if a plate lands in front of you and you do not like it.

You tell me. I take it away. I bring you something else. There is no discussion, no face pulled in the kitchen and nothing added to your bill for the trouble.

I have believed one thing for twenty five years and plenty of people in this trade disagree with me. Whatever has happened at your table, you should walk out of here happy. That is not generosity. It is the only version of this job I know how to do.

You are on holiday. You have a small number of dinners and you spent one of them on me. The least I can do is make sure it counted.
