THE TAVERNA
Over twenty years ago, Michalis Kosmadakis (Michael), gave up his work in ship-engineering and his fishing activities and 'anchored' in the small charming village of Sougia on the south-western coast of Crete. Offering pure, wholesome and delicious Greek food as he likes to eat it himself and of which he could be proud to serve it to his guests. The building he bought allowed for gues
t rooms also, and as such at Anchorage there currently are six simple, yet comfortable rooms. With friendly prices, varying from €25-€35 per day/room, depending on the season, size and stay. With it's beautiful grapevine-shaded terrace and an abundance of beautiful plants, even on the hottest dag you'll can comfortably sit outside and enjoy the excellent kitchen in a classic Greek atmosphere. For a start, Michael owns over 3000 olive trees himself, from which silky, tasteful, organic olive oil (certified) is produced. This oil is of course used in the kitchen and available on every table. Then, Michael works with only the best chefs available in the region, who know how to cook their homeland kitchen in a refined way. Finally, the kitchen only works with pure ingredients which merely come from local farmers. Several kinds of meat, cheeses, wines and the smooth locally produced Grappa-like Raki. Red mullet, anchovies, sardines, calamaris, octopus and various sea basses to name a few. Remember, as a former fisherman, Michael knows his stuff! Wild herbs and spices from the mountains are collected themselves like thyme, oregano, sage, rosemary, garlic and many more. Michael also has his own garden providing fresh and sometimes rare vegetables and herbs. To mention just a few of the mouthwatering dishes:
* Deep-fried zucchini-feta cakes
* In wine marinated and roasted octopus
* Fresh fish of the day, delicately spiced
* Rabbit in creamy cheesesauce
* Roasted young pig with orange sauce
* Stuffed large mushrooms
* Mountain goat stew
But also when you just want to eat more regular food like stuffed tomatoes, tzatziki, chorta, calamaris or a big juicy souvlaki-skewer, Anchorage serves you these famous Greek dishes freshly made daily and in the best quality available. Still, an average two-course meal with drinks will set you back no more than just €12-€20 per person. A PLACE TO VISIT WITH GOOD COMPANY
Though Anchorage is a cosy small taverna, the terrace can be made suitable for larger companies up to about 40 people. Also inside there is enough space to host companies of about the same size. CONTACT
Aside from Greek, Michael speaks English, as does waiter Yannis. Speaking English as well (and ever improving her Greek), German Angelica will above all love to talk with you in German of course! Taverna Anchorage is open from Easter until the end of October,but many times also in other months. Just make inquiries! Michalis Kosmadakis can be reached by phone on:
