Μετά την πτώση των Χανίων στην Οθωμανική Αυτοκρατορία το 1645, οι Τούρκοι ξεκίνησαν ένα πρόγραμμα ανοικοδόμησης, με σκοπό την τροποποίηση των εκκλησιών σε μιναρέδες, την κατασκευή πολλών ιδιωτικών και δημοσίων λουτρών «Χαμάμ» και σιντριβανιών.
Το «Χαμάμ» συνδυάζει την παράδοση των Ρωμαϊκών και Βυζαντινών λουτρών, με τα υπόγεια κανάλια και της πήλινες σωλήνες που διοχέτευαν με ζεστό νερό και ατμό

τα ειδικά δωμάτια.
Τρία τέτοια λουτρά σώζονται μέχρι σήμερα, όμως φυσικά δεν λειτουργεί κανένα από αυτά. Το κτίριο στο δρόμο της Ζαμπελίου δίπλα στο εστιατόριο «Ταμάμ», είναι της ενετικής περιόδου και διακρίνεται από τα αυθεντικά τετράγωνα παράθυρα, που όμως κλείστηκαν από τους Τούρκους και στη θέση τους φτιάχτηκαν θολωτά τούρκικου ρυθμού. Το κτίριο του «Χαμάμ» έχει έξι ημισφαιρικούς τρούλους και στο παρελθόν είχε έναν ακόμη όροφο που καταστράφηκε από βομβαρδισμό το 1941.
Εάν παρατηρήσετε μέσα από τα παράθυρα του κτηρίου θα δείτε τις τρύπες στους ημισφαιρικούς τρούλους, όπου χρησίμευαν στη διαφυγή των ατμών. Το εστιατόριο «Ταμάμ» βρίσκεται στο σημείο που υπήρχε η «κρύα πισίνα» του Χαμάμ όπου βουτούσες μετά από ένα καλό ατμόλουτρο. Στον ίδιο χώρο μπορείς να απολαύσεις τη μοναδική κουζίνα και ατμόσφαιρα του εστιατορίου «Ταμάμ». After the fall of Hania (then called “La Canea” by the Venetians) to the Ottoman empire in 1645, the Turks set about an extensive building program of converting Catholic churches to mosques and constructing numerous private and public baths (Hamam) and fountains. The “Hamam” combines the tradition of the Roman and Byzantine baths with their underground hypocausts and pipes conveying hot water and steam to the appropriate rooms. The building in Zambeliou street, next door to “Tamam” is obviously of the Venetian period as can be seen by the original rectangular window openings now blocked in and the very fine, round headed, stone window openings inserted by the Turks. These bath buildings have six large hemispherical domes (without drums) and previously had an upper store, which was demolished by the bombing in 1941. Look through the grilles of the window openings and you can see the holes in the domes that allowed the hot steam to escape.
