Everyone has been watching more than the fires on Crete this week.

Since January, wildfires have burned over 116,000 hectares across France, surpassing the previous record set in 2022. Growers around Bordeaux and Provence say the flames are reaching forests, towns and communities — but not yet the vines.

But before vineyards, classifications and vintages, there are human lives. Homes, families, animals, livelihoods and landscapes that may never fully return.

In the Var, one winemaker described the forests surrounding her vineyards as tinderboxes, following every new fire from her phone. Another grower in Provence has now lived through drought, frost, hail and fire in four consecutive vintages. Spain is facing fires near Madrid. Crete had two close calls of its own this July.

Giorgos Badogiannis does not see this as a French problem, a Greek problem or a Spanish problem. It is the same summer, arriving in different places on different weeks.

For a sommelier, climate is no longer something outside the glass. It shapes the fruit, the yield, the harvest date, the acidity and, sometimes, the smoke in the wine itself. But wine is only the visible warning. What is changing is the land beneath it.

The earth was shaped by fire long before us. But the more heat we add, the closer we push the land towards fire and the closer we move towards darkness. Perhaps it is time to forget much of what we thought we knew and prepare for what once seemed impossible.

Vineyards will burn. Regions will change. The boundaries of Premier Cru and Grand Cru will mean very little when the forests around them are gone. Chablis, Bordeaux, Provence perhaps one day even Piedmont are not protected by their history, their reputation or their classifications.

Crete already knows this reality. It returns every few summers, each time a little closer.

This is not politics. It is heat, wind, human life and what we choose to do next.
