Irish Town – From Notoriety to Commerce
Irish Town, is believed to have earned its name in the early 18th century, when Irish women were brought in around 1727 to entertain the garrison, and the street quickly became infamous as the red‑light district of Gibraltar. Over time, its reputation faded and the area transformed into a bustling commercial hub. Today, Irish Town is home to Gibraltar’s favourite fruit shop and a variety of other businesses, blending colourful history with everyday life.
