A notice to all our customers that we’re having a little bit of essential post summer work done on the cafe early next week. We will have our kiosk open on the terrace during this time, please see further details below.

* Essential drainage works are taking place at La Vallette on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 September.
* The café will be closed on Monday and Tuesday morning while the works are carried out.
* ⁠We are hoping to reopen the café on Tuesday, depending on how the works progress.
* The Upper Level Takeaway Kiosk will be open on Monday from 7:00am.
* The kiosk will be closed to the general public until 9:30am on Tuesday, as it is being opened exclusively for a pre-arranged group from 7:00am.
* From 9:30am Tuesday, the takeaway kiosk will be open to everyone.
* The kiosk will offer hot drinks, cold sandwiches, cake and hot soup.
* A Portaloo will be available for visitors while the drainage works are taking place. The public toilets will also be closed. The hot showers will be temporarily unavailable.
* We apologise for any inconvenience and thank customers for their patience and understanding.
* We will provide an update regarding the café’s Tuesday reopening once we know how the works are progressing.
* ⁠The Pools will remain open and unaffected. The scheduled cleans of the Pools will take place later in the week. See gov.gg for information.

We’re pleased to confirm that the Ladies’ Pool will reopen tomorrow 🌊

The scheduled clean is taking place at the moment, the barriers will then be removed tomorrow morning before 9am and the pool will be available from then onwards.

Two sea water samples have been taken from the pool while it’s been closed and both samples have met the ‘excellent’ standard. In addition, after drainage works took place more dye testing has been carried out and no further escaped dye has been detected.

Routine testing of the pool will continue and will be reported at gov.gg/bwq

Environmental Health officers will remain in contact with the team at the Bathing Pools about additional long-term protections being put in place.

Thank you to everyone who was involved in making sure that this could be resolved as quickly as possible.

**La Vallette Update**

We are pleased to provide a further update regarding the recent water quality issue at the Ladies’ Pool at La Vallette.

Following actions taken to identify and address the issue, including subsequent dye testing, Environmental Health Officers are satisfied that the States of Guernsey public toilets and the café toilets, which share a cesspit, pose no further risk to water quality at the Ladies’ Pool.

As a result, the café can now open as normal, and we look forward to welcoming you back.

As an additional precaution, the States of Guernsey’s scheduled cleaning of the Ladies’ Pool will take place on Tuesday, with the Ladies’ Pool reopening to the public on Wednesday.

The Children’s Pool, Horseshoe Landing and Gents’ Pool remain open and available to the public (subject to scheduled cleans).

Vive La Vallette will continue to work closely with the States of Guernsey, Environmental Health and the relevant parties to ensure appropriate monitoring and safeguards are in place. We are also progressing a number of measures to further strengthen the arrangements and ensure that an issue of this nature cannot happen again.

Update on temporary closure of the Ladies’ Pool:

Environmental Health visited The Bathing Pools this morning to meet with the team there as well as drainage experts.

Although we are waiting for a formal report, we believe that the cause of the problem has been identified. It is understood that a defect meant that waste water was escaping from the cesspit and into the surface water system before discharging out of the drainage in the wall and towards the Ladies’ Pool.

While measures have already been undertaken to prevent a recurrence, until Environmental Health has received the formal report, we’ve asked for the public and café toilets to remain out of use. This should allow The Bathing Pools café to at least operate on a reduced capacity.

In terms of what this means for pool itself, a sample has been taken from Ladies’ Pool – following the immediate issue being rectified - and we are awaiting the results. The Ladies’ Pool is currently scheduled to be emptied and cleaned on Tuesday, so the pool will remain closed until then as a precaution. This will also allow time for short-term mitigations to be reviewed while a permanent solution is arranged.

If the water sample results are acceptable, once the pool has been cleaned and the mitigation measures are in place, the Ladies’ Pool should be able to reopen on Wednesday.

As previously mentioned, yesterday’s dye testing has not indicated that the other bathing pools are affected, and therefore users can continue to use the other pools.

*Update regarding water quality and the Ladies’ Pool*

Environmental Health visited our site today to undertake a dye test of the effluent system, following an unsatisfactory water test result last week. We were not contacted by Environmental Health prior to today’s visit to advise us of an issue.

The public toilets and café currently share a cesspit. Following immediate investigation and remedial work by the café’s contractors today, the issue has been attributed to the cesspit becoming overfilled and coming under pressure from the volume of wastewater entering the shared system.

The immediate solution was to fully empty the cesspit today, with this currently scheduled to take place twice weekly. A longer-term solution has also been proposed to address the shared system and provide a more sustainable resolution.

We are deeply disappointed that this issue has affected the use of the Ladies’ Pool and, most importantly, water quality. We are working closely with the States of Guernsey and all relevant parties to ensure the matter is resolved as quickly as possible and that a suitable long-term solution is put in place without delay.

We sincerely apologise for the disruption and appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to resolve this shared issue.

Environmental Health will continue to monitor water quality and publish results.
