Art for Guernsey and China Red are delighted to be celebrating the Chinese New Year together by unveiling, for the first time, a very special work by the fantastic artist Oleg Mikhailov.


First Steps was specially commissioned by a museum in Shanghai to celebrate the Year of the Horse and to bring good fortune and luck for the year ahead. The piece combines lithography and screenprinting, delicately finished by hand with watercolour, creating a complex work.

In this composition, Oleg captures the quiet power and vulnerability of a horse taking its very first steps — a tender yet powerful moment of new beginnings.

In Chinese culture, the Horse symbolises energy, determination, freedom, and forward drive — a sign of progress and bold new chapters.
First Steps invites us to reflect on our own journeys as we step into the year ahead with confidence, courage, and hope.
