Hallo, Brüder und Schwestern!
This Thursday we will continue our journey through the history of the Early Modern period, diving into a tragic and decisive moment in European history that both divided the continent and shaped it into what we know today.
We will examine the complex topic of the Western Christian schism, which became a revolution in the spheres of freedom, tolerance, and religious thought — a process that, through fire and sword, divided millions of people, past and future alike, forming new nations, destroying and reinforcing old hierarchies, and reshaping the relationships between power, the individual, and faith.
We will try to understand how the unique political entities of this era functioned, such as the Holy Roman Empire and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. We will witness the preaching of Luther and Calvin, learn what answers were offered to this challenge by the figures of the Counter-Reformation and the Jesuit order, and finally observe the bloody birth of a renewed Europe that only learned to respect differences in human belief after the lessons of the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, the Thirty Years’ War, and the English Revolution.
It will be a challenging but very engaging discussion!
