Warm hospitality and some of the finest all-natural, organic, handmade tea in Georgia at the Bitsadze brothers’ place in Etseri village, Imereti, with two American guests. We were the very first to taste their new pan-fried green tea, a spectacular achievement: it carries an instantly arresting aroma of toasted grains and an exceptionally soft body. Although Georgia makes some amazing teas, it can be hard to find places here that actually sell the good stuff if you don’t go out to the plantations and factories themselves. Tea Republic ( ) is a new cafΓ©, tasting room, and outlet for a wide variety of fantastic Gurian teas produced by , just a 5 minute walk from Rustaveli metro. Highly recommended if you are in Tbilisi and looking for a place to try great Georgian tea!

This one goes out to our dear friends at Komli β€’ αƒ™αƒαƒ›αƒšαƒ˜, who proudly run one of the best tea tourism operations in the country. Lika's family has been doing tea for generations in this dreamy corner of Guria and they have the museum to prove it. Besides a thorough education in the history of Georgian tea, you'll get here a full belly of amazing Gurian specialties (strictly farm-to-table and recipes you'd never find in any city restaurant!) and endless inspiration, tranquility and love. That's just the start of it - read more at https://georgianteamakers.com/georgian-tea-directory/komli/ for more surprises, or just head on down for a visit!

The Georgian Tea Makers project is mainly intended to bring attention to the small-scale artisans who have made a new name for Georgian tea with superior quality, bold flavor, and commitment to natural methods - but these principles aren't exclusive to the smallest producers! When I started looking for tea makers interested in being profiled for the website, Gela Garchagodashvili of αƒ©αƒαƒ˜ αƒ›αƒαƒ αƒ’αƒ•αƒ˜αƒšαƒ˜/Tea Martvili was one of the first to reach out to me. Martvili Tea is one of the largest tea factories in Georgia and definitive proof that quality does not have to be sacrificed for scale. They produce several different grades of black and green tea, the best of which is excellent and the rest of which are perfectly serviceable for non-connoisseur market segments. They also make these ingenious tea balls wrapped in local citrus peels. Read more on the website at https://georgianteamakers.com/georgian-tea-directory/martvili-tea/

Here's Tornike Shekiladze of Tea Gezruli β€’ αƒ©αƒαƒ˜ αƒ’αƒ”αƒ–αƒ αƒ£αƒšαƒ˜ in search of wild tea in the forests of upland Chiatura. The woodlands have retaken the plantation since decades, but the tea bushes remain happy and healthy, flourishing like a native plant.

Tornike goes twice a year to collect wild tea leaves, first in spring to make an exquisite white tea, then later for a superb rolled black. Tornike also collects wild blueberry leaves (Vaccinium arctostaphylos) from the same forest for one of the tangiest motsvi infusions I've tasted, and maintains a small plot of cultivated tea as well.

With the road to Gezruli recently paved, there's no excuse not to head out there for a most adventurous tour and tasting - you can even stay overnight in his magnificent guesthouse (Tornike is also a trained woodworker!) Well familiar to anyone who followed us in the Nela Nela days, S***a Kopaliani and his wife Ia are true wizards of herbal tea. They travel to the remotest mountains of Lechkhumi region, and to forgotten, rewilded sites of former villages to collect tender young fruit leaves and a considerable variety of wild herbs. They then masterfully oxidise them using their proprietary variations on the black tea production process to extract the deep secrets of their flavor. Their products are available both pure and in thoughtful blends. Read more at https://georgianteamakers.com/georgian-tea-directory/shota-kopaliani/

This post is dedicated to the queen of Megrelian tea, Nargiza Ghvinjilia. Nargiza has worked with tea her whole life and is still turning out some of the finest, tastiest Georgian tea well into her 80s. She runs her whole operation with her assistant, Mzia, out of a small side room of the central Tsalenjikha tea factory, where she still works as the head tea technologist. Her teas are true marvels of the palate, meticulously handcrafted and lavished with the care only decades of wisdom can provide.

Thanks to a friend, Georgii, who worked and studied with her for a while and now is the head of tea at Zemo Tea Gardens (I'll hopefully get a profile for them up soon!) it's easy to order Nargiza's tea - just get in contact with the Instagram page .tea - or visit our webpage, https://georgianteamakers.com/georgian-tea-directory/nargiza-ghvinjilia/ to read more!

Over the next bit of time, I am going to post here the content which I currently have on the website. After a bit of time we will be caught up and then I will post updates as I add more content. I am a firm believer that the web-based internet was and remains vastly superior to social media as a means of sharing information, so you are never going to get the full story in these posts! You will have to go to the website for better quality photos and more detailed texts.

This post is dedicated to some of our favorite teamakers of Georgia, the Tenieshvili father-and-son business in Bakhvi, Guria. Dato and Gabriel have a remarkable story and were practically the first folks out there transforming Georgian tea from the old Soviet mass production style to a high-quality, richly flavored, organic product back in the chaos of the 1990s. Today they remain at the forefront of both teamaking and regenerative farming techniques in Georgia, making some of the hands-down best tea to be found within the borders of Georgia. They are cracking good hosts as well - definitely worth a visit if you are ever in the Ozurgeti area for a tasting and a trip round the homestead!

As always, read more on the website: https://georgianteamakers.com/georgian-tea-directory/tenieshvili-family/ -- or check out the Teni Tea FB at https://www.facebook.com/TeniteaGE
