Which is the UK's oldest pub?

A heavily debated title, that more than 1 pub claims to own. Pubs have been part of country for over 1,000 years! Some have been pouring pints since the medieval times. Many of the buildings that our pubs sit in date back earlier than the pubs themselves!

So how do we define the oldest pub? And does one of these three take the crown?

Most traditional pub in the UK?

Sisters Claire and Nisa have run their family pub for decades and they have kept everything in the pub exactly the same for all those years. Still cash only, only 2 cask beers and a soup with a recipe that's unchanged since the Victorian era.

Scotlands best beach pub?

The landlord calls this pub garden ‘Scotlands answer to La Folie Douce’. The front garden overlooks Elie Bay, which is a hot spot for water sports during the summer season.

Cricket matches get played on the sand when the tide goes out. Locals get together to make sure the matches go ahead. Farmers come down to flatten the sand and remove the seaweed. On match days this pub gets busy.

This pub sits in the birthplace of the industrial revolution!
The village of Coalbrookdale is within Ironbridge Gorge, which is where an event, that would change the modern world forever, took place in 1709.

A man names Abraham Darby found a new way of smelting iron, without the use of charcoal. This made the iron produced stronger, cheaper and possible to be produced on a massive scale. This breakthrough kickstarted the Industrial Revolution, helping transform everything from bridges and railways to factories and modern cities across the entire world.

The Coalbrookdale Inn has been around since the 18th century, meaning back in the day, locals would include; iron workers, engineers, minders and pioneers of the modern railway.

It has kept a great sense of community to this day and has a fantastically welcoming atmosphere. All are welcome to sit up at the horseshoe bar where you will be faced by 8 hand-pulled ales. Recognised many times by CAMRA this is a real community ale house that must be visited when exploring the UNESCO world heritage site of Ironbridge.

One of the oldest pubs in West Sussex.

Dating back to 1276, this pub has some stories! It's thought that Charles II stopped at this pub for a pint before fleeing England in 1651.

Back in the day a circus was travelling through the village and the Elephants were in need of a drink.. they took the Elephants to the river only to find out the river was salt water. So the pub stepped in.. filled their bath tub and the Elephants drank directly from the tub through the upstairs window. You can still see the original picture of one of the elephants displayed above the fireplace to this day.

This pub is one of our favorites in Surrey.

It’s in the little village of Elstead, a 10 minute drive from Godalming. When you arrive you are greeted by a grand entrance down a cobbled driveway, as you go over the bridge on your right you can see one of the best views of the pub.

When you enter the pub you get an amazing look of the old watermill with water rushing straight through the pub, its beautiful wooden beams and exposed brick work give it that aged character that we all love.

The pub has an amazing past. It was a working watermill that used to make braid for military uniforms, and it was used as a hospital during WW2.

It holds an incredible beer garden, with some very friendly ducks, you can even buy duck feed from behind the bar to feed them.

While we were there they had a classic car meet with some very cool vintage Bugattis. They host loads of different events throughout the year from Shakespeare in the garden to Stand Up Comedy nights.

This has got to be one of the best beer gardens in Surrey, another one to add to your list of pubs not to miss!
