We had a team outing last night to see Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. It’s probably no surprise that we’ve got some big film fans in the team so we couldn’t miss out on this EPIC blockbuster!

Did you know that we also show films in our little screening room downstairs at the café? Not the new releases you’ll find at a regular cinema but a wide range of fantastic films nevertheless. You can find out what’s playing by popping into the café or signing up to our email newsletter. This Sunday we’re showing one of my all-time favourite films. Made in 1981 it is, I think, a great accompaniment to the Odyssey if you need another Greek mythology fix!

We’re closing a little early this Wednesday and Sunday. That’s partly because of the football and we’re expecting Wi******er to become a ghost town but, truth be told, we also find ourselves suddenly and unexpectedly short-staffed.

If you know any reliable, good-natured people persons looking for work, please send them our way. The news tells us that there are loads of young people looking for employment so we remain hopeful!

Our summer menu has landed and we’ve levelled up our eggy crumpets. Now served with homemade beans, halloumi and our sweet chilli jam.

Brunch is served until 2pm Wednesday to Sunday. Bon appetit!

Yes, it’s hot today but there’s a light breeze coming up Jewry Street and I’ve got a nice shady spot to enjoy an iced flat white and watch the world go by.

It’s a quieter part of town, for sure, but I’ve always thought that was part of its charm. It’s nice to escape the hustle and bustle; even that of our little city.

And if the heat gets too much outside, I’ll retreat to the air-conditioned inside, where it’s a good 10° cooler! ❄️

Happy memories of the city’s Independents Month campaign in 2018. What fun we had! At the time, I remember a debate being had about whether the slogan “use us or lose us” was too aggressive. How the world has changed since then!

The city landscape looks a little different now with many of our peers and friends having closed their businesses in recent years. The impact of Brexit and then the pandemic followed by successive economic crises have really put independents under a lot of pressure. Recent increases to National Insurance and Business Rates are the cherry on the cake. Thank you very much Ms Reeves.

Over the next month you’ll no doubt see local hospitality businesses talking about a campaign launched by UKHospitality and to drop VAT for hospitality to 10%. That’s more in line with the rest of Europe and of much greater benefit than a temporary reduction for kids’ meals!
