On September 2nd a mere 360 years ago a baker, named Thomas Farriner, went to bed as usual after a long day in the bakery only to be woken up just after midnight by the smell of smoke. His house was on fire, quite seriously as it turned out. He fled through an upstairs window to a neighbouring house, taking his family with him. Unfortunately his maidservant wasn't quite so nimble and she became the first victim of the Great Fire of London. Ultimately it was estimated that there were only around 8 deaths in total, which is probably incorrect. However the conflagration claimed around 13,500 houses (around 15% of the city's housing), 87 churches, 44 Company halls, St Pauls Cathedral (the original one) and three of the City gates. Much like the inferno of 1666, our pizzas are wood-fired, but come with much less risk and almost no peril.

Here are our specials for this week, and remember you can always ignore all of the hard work that went into devising them and concoct your own topping. If you must.

THURSDAY
Oven roasted aubergine, roasted sliced potato, kalamata olives, pine nuts and flat leaf parsley on a cream and herb base.
If you don’t want to eat meat tonight, then tonight is your lucky night! This is a great, fresh, healthy-looking, satisfying pizza. And that’s all I have to say.

FRIDAY
Italian style pork and beef meatballs, with pearl chillies, on a light tomato and mozzarella base.
Meatballs…blah blah…meatballs…..yum yum.

SATURDAY
Bacon, on a bed of buttered spinach, kalamata olives and feta on a light mozzarella and tomato base.
I think the only thing that could improve this is an egg. In my opinion.

SUNDAY
Anchovy, capers, black olives, and green beans on a light tomato and mozzarella base.
Simple, tangy and super tasty.

Back in 1893, a small-town pharmacist in North Carolina mixed up a batch of sugar, water, caramel, lemon oil and a hint of nutmeg behind his drugstore counter. Caleb Bradham had a local hit on his hands, but "Brad's Drink" was never going to travel. Marketed as a tonic for the digestion — dyspepsia, as it was known then — he landed on a snappier name: Pepsi. The Pepsi-Cola Company followed in 1902, and it wasn't long before the racing driver Barney Oldfield became the first of many famous faces to put his name to the drink. The rest, as they say, is sweet history.

So while you're tucking into a pizza here at Bootmakers, feel free to bring the story to life with an ice-cold Pepsi — or, if you fancy something with a bit more kick, how about a Fanta?

Special Lunchtime Openings — Week of 10th August

We've got extra opening hours this week! We're open for lunch today, Monday 10th August and this Friday 14th August, both 12 noon – 4pm. On Friday we're also open in the evening as usual, 6pm – 9pm.

This is on top of our regular hours: Thursday to Sunday, 6pm – 9pm.

Last week was a record-breaker for us, the busiest since we opened the restaurant in February. We're not quite in the league of the 2,300 pizzas served in one sitting by the Spanish town pictured below, but by our standards it was wonderfully chaotic.

Now for the less good news: we'll be closed from 18th–26th August.

All the more reason to get your pizza fix while you can!

Back from a fortnight eating our way through France and Germany, which we've decided counts as research. Rested, a few pounds heavier, and ready to tend the oven at Bootmakers.

The wood’s been unloaded and the dough will be stretched as thin as ever.

We won't bang on about ‘authentic,’ we'll just let our specials do the talking.

Friday: Napoli salami, red onion and chargrilled artichoke on a tomato and mozzarella base.

Saturday: Moroccan spiced beef meatballs, coriander, pomegranate, yogurt dressing and cherry tomatoes on a tomato and fresh mozzarella base.

Sunday: Veggie four seasons: pearl chillies and ricotta, garlic butter and wilted spinach, roast peppers and fresh pineapple and mozzarella and red onion. On a tomato and cheese base.

Public Pizza Announcement
We’re offering FREE garlic bread this week and opening LONGER HOURS because we're escaping on holiday for two weeks next week (yes, pizza makers need a break too). We'll be closed 16th–30th July (inclusive).

To soften the blow, this week WE'RE OPENING SATURDAY & SUNDAY DAYTIME, as well as our usual evenings, plus we're offering a FREE GARLIC BREAD with every order!
