In a week marking the rise of Simon and Garfunkel’s song Mrs Robinson to #1 in the US, we ponder how differently the film The Graduate could have turned out. Dustin Hoffman wasn’t first choice to play Benjamin Braddock(Robert Redford was tipped for the role) and Anne Bancroft, who played Mrs Robinson, was only 6 years older than Hoffman in real life. The Sound of Silence, which quietly ties the story together, was originally released as an acoustic song and went largely unnoticed until a producer secretly added electric instruments and drums without Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel knowing.

At Bootmakers we like to think that the unlikely pairings of our weekly specials are as on point and surprising.

Opened in May 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge became an instant symbol of American engineering and ingenuity. At the time, its 1.7-mile span made it the world’s longest suspension bridge. While its distinctive hue made it more visible in San Francisco’s famous fog. On opening day, 200,000 people crossed it on foot before cars were allowed on, causing some people to say they finally had something worth crossing town for.

We’d like to think our pizzas (eat in or takeaway) are also worth a short excursion. Even in this California-style heatwave.

In a couple of weeks it will be 45 years since the release of "Ghost Town" by The Specials, that legendary two-tone band of the 1980's. It reached number one in the British charts and stayed there for 3 weeks and remained in the top 40 for 11 weeks. The song evoked themes of urban decay, deindustrialisation, unemployment and violence in inner cities and it became a hit as riots broke out across the UK. Ironically, the band itself was tearing itself apart and the single was the last one release by the original seven members. Despite it's lack of frothy pop cheer the three major music publications in the UK all voted it "Single of the Year for 1981" and it was the 12th best-selling single in the year. But that's enough about The Specials. Lets talk about the specials! (we don't just throw this stuff together you know)

THURSDAY
Grilled aubergine, feta, pistachio nuts, roasted cherry tomatoes and home made basil pesto on a light tomato and mozzarella base.
A meat-free delight!

FRIDAY
Italian style beef meatballs, roasted peppers and kalamata olives on a light tomato and mozzarella base.
As reliable as Crackerjack (ask your parents).

SATURDAY
Prosciutto, mushroom (lots of mushrooms) and caramelised onion on a light tomato and mozzarella base.

SUNDAY
Napoli salami, black olives and mild pearl chillies on a light tomato and mozzarella base.
Simple but rich.

Drop in to the restaurant to eat in or takeaway. Or better still, phone ahead to book a table or takeaway.

Collect from 5 Market Place, Wincanton BA9 9LJ.

Marking the anniversary of Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969), Bootmakers honours the iconic troupe that used low-budget TV, stiff upper lip and knights demanding shrubberies to bring the house down. This bizarre group, which included a doctor, a couple of historians, and a political scientist changed comedy forever. And Eric Idle, went on to sing "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," giving “I did It My Way” a run for its money as the most played song at British funerals.

Our specials for the week 11 May

THURSDAY: Calzone folded pizza with brie, West Country ham, cheese, tomato, and chunky field mushrooms.

FRIDAY: Moroccan spiced (beef) meatballs with caramelised red onion and cherry tomatoes on a tomato and cheese base. You demanded the return of meatballs. We listened.

SATURDAY: A heavenly pizza topped with speciality mushrooms from Wincanton’s The Mushroom Shop, wilted spinach and garlic croutons, on a parmesan and ricotta base.

SUNDAY: Olives, tuna, capers, anchovies and red onion on a cream and herb base. The cream balances the saltiness perfectly.

Demand is high, so please book ahead if you can (for tables or takeaway) by text to our pizza room on 07471 153418.

Back in 1886, when pharmacist John Stith Pemberton first served up Coca-Cola, it wasn’t pitched as the fizzy coin cleaner we know today, but as a tonic for headaches, lethargy, and general life ills. Of course, Coca-Cola soon left the medicine cabinet in search of global refreshment fame, and as they say, ‘the rest is history’. At Bootmakers, we like to think we’re also among life’s great healers. Sourdough might not cure heartbreak, put right a bad week, or make you bounce out of bed in the mornings, but it’s produced miraculously improved moods in some of our diners.

Specials for the week of May 4th

Thursday: Veggie four seasons: mushrooms and ricotta, artichoke and pine nuts, red onion and balsamic glaze, and roasted vegetables and goat’s cheese, on a light tomato and cheese base.

Friday: Smoked duck, cranberry, caramelised peppers and flat leaf parsley, on a tomato and cheese base.

Saturday: a riot of speciality mushrooms from Wincanton’s The Mushroom Shop, wilted garlic spinach, and sweet pearl chillies, on a Ricotta and herb base.

Sunday: Creamed lemon feta with, mozzarella, roast courgette, homemade pesto and pancetta, on a light tomato base.

Demand is high, so please book ahead if you can (for tables or takeaway) by text to our pizza room on 07471 153418.

Maypole dancing has spent centuries proving that humans will happily turn a perfectly ordinary pole into a social event. Dating back to medieval Europe, villages (often in England and Germany) erected decorated poles each spring to celebrate renewal and warmer weather. Dancers wove colourful ribbons into patterns symbolising community harmony, often ending in an equally symbolic giant knot. Such fun was had that deeply offended 17th century Puritans, labelled them ‘scandalously joyful’, which boosted the maypole’s reputation as history’s most wholesome rebellion. Of course, in many ways, sourdough pizza carries on this noble tradition: warm, communal, slightly impractical, and wholesomely rebellious enough to make anyone suspicious of fun mildly uncomfortable.

Our specials for the week of 27th April

THURSDAY: Goat’s cheese, olives, artichokes, caramelised onions, balsamic glaze, and rosemary on a cream, herb and parmesan base.

FRIDAY: Delicious mini chorizos, ricotta, black olives, and lots of fresh mozzarella on a tomato and cheese base, with rocket and a dash of peri peri sauce.

SATURDAY: Thyme and parmesan layered potatoes with chopped salami, red onion and asparagus. On a garlic butter and herb base.

SUNDAY: Warm, creamy garlicky yogurt topped with soft poached eggs and drizzled with spicy Aleppo pepper butter, on a tomato base, garnished with fresh dill.

Demand is high, so please book ahead if you can (for tables or takeaway) by text to our pizza room on 07471 153418.

This week in the 1970’s highlights the enduring pop brilliance of ABBA, with the release of ‘Mamma Mia’, a song that propelled them from Eurovision winners to global icons. Its catchy, theatrical energy shows how something simple but memorable can achieve huge reach. Of course, we at Bootmakers like to think that a well-made pizza, served in a simple setting, can grow into a quiet local legend over time.

It had been a long, long time – at least 10,000 years – since the American continent had had an elephant on it. This week in 1796 saw the arrival of such a beast in New York City. It was an Asian elephant bought for $450 by Jacob Crowninshield of Massachussets. His plan was to tour the country with the pitiful pachyderm, and at the height of its fame sell it for a profit. The unnamed elephant was a two year old female was brought from Calcutta aboard the good ship “America”, of which Crowninshield was the captain. It was displayed on Broadway with much public excitement. It was quickly determined that nobody knew how to care for an elephant and it was fed on green vegetables and liquor, and this allegedly left the beast looking silky and healthy-looking. Crownishield’s business plan was faultless and he eventually sold her for $10,000 and she went on to tour the United States for the next two years. The elephant was never formally named, and its fate is unknown. Maybe it was deported for being an illegal alien. Anyway, on to our specials this week, which are all fab!

Remember, you can order one of our specials, or something from our regular menu, or come up with your own combination – if WE have it, YOU can have it.

We are open from Thursday to Sunday, 6pm to 9pm
Order by phone or text ONLY, and order days in advance if you wish!

If you would like to eat in our restaurant it’s often better to book in advance, especially on a Friday and Saturday.

Absent from our menu for some time, we thought it should rear it’s tasty head again.

SATURDAY
Burrata, sundried tomatoes, home-made pesto and sweet pearl chillies on a light mozzarella and tomato base.
Dead simple, dead tasty.

A great meeting of ingredients.

Many thanks, and see you next week!

During the unforgettable Apollo 13 mission, astronaut Jack Swigert delivered his now-iconic line, “Houston, we have a problem.” Although slightly misquoted, this was arguably the calmest way anyone has ever said “things aren’t going according to plan.” Fast forward to today’s Artemis programme, and while missions are packed with cutting-edge technology and carefully planned systems, that same spirit of quick thinking and teamwork still shines through.
Despite some incredibly busy evenings lately, we at Bootmakers Pizza like to think that we handle things with a similar amount of equanimity. After all, it’s not rocket science, it’s only sourdough.
So in our calmest possible tone, here are our specials for the week of April 6th

Thursday: Smoked applewood with sauteed potatoes, red onion, wilted spinach and free-range egg on a cream and herb base.

Friday: Roast duck with redcurrant jelly, roast vegetables and watercress. On a cheese and tomato base.

Saturday: Richly flavoured specialty mushrooms from Wincanton’s very own Mushroom Shop, with fresh thyme, parmesan and spicy Nduja sausage, on a tomato and cheese base.

Sunday: A good old favourite: the posh Hawaiian – fresh chargrilled pineapple, brie, tomato sauce and prosciutto.

Demand is high, so please book ahead if you can (for tables or takeaway) by text to our pizza room on 07471 153418.

30/03/2026

On Friday afternoon, March 30th 1984, 55-year-old Chief of Detectives Sgt. Robert Cunningham paid a visit to his favourite pizzeria. He’d been frequenting Sal’s Pizzeria in Yonkers, New York, for 7 or 8 years. While waiting to be served he set about filling in the lottery ticket he’d bought earlier that day. Phyllis Penzo, waitress at Sal’s, came to take Cunningham’s order and they began idly talking about the lottery and what they would do if either of them ever won the jackpot. Just for fun, Cunningham then asked her to pick three of the lottery numbers. She chose 7, 29 and 9, all numbers that had personal significance to her. Cunningham chose 21, 28 and 43 off the top of his head.

After his pizza, and as he was about to settle up, he offered Phyllis two choices – accept “a chintzy tip or go half on the card” – 15% tip or half of the winnings. Surprisingly, and bearing in mind that the chances of winning the jackpot were a reasonably formidable 3,529,562 to 1, Phyllis chose to take a chance on the lottery ticket.

Despite those odds, all of those numbers came up. Cunningham waited an agonising three days for the lottery organisers to confirm the win and he was finally informed that he had won $6 million. True to his word Cunningham went back to Sal’s and gave Phyllis the news, and $3 million.

Should any customers want to share their lottery win with us, instead of leaving a tip in our restaurant, then who are we to argue. But if you’re not the gambling type then pop in and see us for a great wood-fired pizza, you won’t be taking a chance.

Place your order for take-away or eat-in, BY TEXT OR PHONE ONLY, on 07471 153418.

Collect from the Pizza Window on Church Street Wincanton. We are open from 6pm to 9pm, Thursday to Sunday. Place any order whenever you like – days in advance if you wish!

Choose from our list of specials, our regular menu or conjure something up of your own choosing! We really don't mind!

If you would like to eat in our restaurant then we would advise you to book a table in advance, especially for a Friday or Saturday.

THURSDAY
Creamy burrata, lilliput capers, home-made pesto and kalamata olives on a base of roughly chopped tomato.
Last week’s favourite special has resurfaced with new-found confidence. Such a simple and satisfying pizza.

FRIDAY
Moroccan-style spiced lamb, roasted cherry tomatoes, feta and coriander yogurt on a rough-chopped tomato base.
A customer favourite, and if you’re eating in our restaurant it goes well with a punchy red wine.

SATURDAY
Goats cheese, black olives, pancetta and thinly sliced roasted apple on a cream and herb base.
The apple is back. Great with the salty pancetta and the creamy goats cheese.

SUNDAY
Asparagus, artichokes, mushrooms and sweet garden peas, with fresh mozzarella on a cream and home-made pesto base.
Has Spring sprung?

Thank you for your custom and see you soon!
