One of Whitby’s most distinctive souvenirs will once again have a physical home in the town, more than a year after the famous Lucky Duck shop closed its doors on Sandgate. 🦆❤️

Glassmaker Peter Rantell founded Whitby Glass in 1958, and its tiny handmade Lucky Ducks became one of the town’s most recognisable souvenirs, produced in 12 birthstone colours and taken home by generations of visitors.

The much-loved Sandgate shop closed for the final time on 20 June 2025 after the death of Dorothy Clegg, who took over the business in 1972. Crowds queued outside during its final days to buy one last Lucky Duck and share their memories.

At the time, there was hope the ducks might return — and now they are!

Whitby Lucky Duck has announced it has partnered with THREE experienced glassmakers and will be setting up at Whitby Town Hall Marketplace, just around the corner from the original shop.

The new stall is due to launch this Sunday, 27 September, weather permitting, and will then appear every Sunday, as well as during Halloween, Whitby Goth Weekend and other special events.

From early 2027, plans are in place for the Lucky Ducks to be available at the market on most days.

Postal orders and special editions will continue too.

It’s lovely to see a new chapter beginning for the Whitby Lucky Duck.
