Greens Newsletter July 2026
Welcome all to the Costa Del Weymouth, hot has been an understatement over the past weeks with record breaking temperatures and more to come if the forecast is correct.
For all you mad dogs or English golfers please be safe when playing in hot conditions, stay hydrated, stay shaded wear a hat or for some play mostly from the trees and plenty of sun cream. These wise words are also instilled in my staff, who have and always work in any weather, and I take my hat off to them but obviously not if it’s sunny.
Heat stress to our turf is becoming a major factor as the climate changes and is a massive challenge to keep the turf healthy for play. Things we do to combat hot and dry weather are many from encouraging deeper rooting grasses by aeration and overseeding, keeping thatch levels low, use of wetting agents to aid water pe*******on into the soil profile, raising cutting heights with reduced frequency of mowing and of course careful use of the irrigation accompanied by hand watering of high and dry spots to maintain soil moisture levels to the optimum and the greenkeepers rain dance as nothing beats a drop of summer rainfall.
As our irrigation system is at full stretch and the hardware is now celebrating its 30th and 40th birthdays maintenance to the system is always a challenge and yes, we do have a few minor leaks about the course but on the whole, touch wood the system is currently operating well and the minor issues we have will be addressed as our mowing workload drops due to the dry weather.
Bunkers will also see a top up of sand shortly along with hedge cutting and some lower tree branch removal about the course. Pathways will have a spray for weeds and slabs will be laid at the rear of the 18th green to accommodate two new benches kindly donated by the senior section.
Congratulations to Ben Tyrrell who won the Club Championship at Came Down recently and with Ben, Billy Richardson and Craig Adams all good golfers, it is good to have their viewpoint about course playability as I am long retired even though a miss print recently said differently.
Thank you to all members who are making the effort to repair pitchmarks and rake footprints in bunkers and we have seen a noticeable improvement in the basic skills of course etiquette recently and it really helps the course to stay in good condition.
Enjoy your golf and stay safe in the heat.
