I very rarely post on Facebook or social media anything other than standard business like posts
However the events of the last two days make me want to publish the following words :-
As a Mersea resident and business owner I firstly want to express my deepest condolences and sympathy for the family of those who lost their lives yesterday in such tragic circumstances. Nobody should have to experience the horror of a family day out at the seaside turning into such a terrible tragedy. My thoughts are with you at this terrible time.
I want to express my gratitude to my amazing team of young staff who showed what the majority of young people are made of in the hardest times of adversity. The four teenagers showed courage and strength in facing the situation before the emergency services arrived and should be so proud of their selves in coping with the unfolding emergency. There is no need to name them they know who they are and the difference they made.
Lastly and by no means last the emergency services who attended so quickly and who bear the brunt of such a high level tragedy and keep us safe on a daily basis who are after all just human beings.
I ask people to respect the privacy of the family and the staff and I desperately hope that this incident sees us with a Lifeguard presence on Mersea in the busy summer season along with some signage and flags that indicate the location of the sandbanks and to avoid these areas.
RIP those who lost their lives on our beach you are in our hearts and thoughts ❤️
