From Odette’s granddaughter….

I know it will have been with a heavy heart that you told us that news, Nancy. It was clear to us all that you poured a large part of your soul into Odette’s Tearooms, named after our Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Odette Hallowes, who was one of WWII's bravest and most highly decorated Special Operations Executive Agents.

We always felt it was a place that touched the people who came through its doors in many different ways. Regular customers will have felt it was a place they could go to, where they would see familiar faces; where they felt welcomed, where they felt appreciated. Other customers from further afield, would we are sure, come away feeling that they had found a real gem in the heart of Wellington. Others would have been moved to learn that the Tearooms were dedicated to Odette, and they would have learnt more about her life, or perhaps even heard about her for the first time. All of them would have felt they were somewhere special, just as we did when we visited you.

One thing is for sure, the seeds of Odette’s legacy that you have sown through the Tearooms, spread far and wide, and will continue to do so. Thanks to you, we have 'Odette Avenue’ and the 'Odette Hallowes Award For Overcoming Adversity', and the ‘Ministry of Memory’ production, among other things. Furthermore, the many people who have visited the Tearooms and learned about Odette will have no doubt gone on to tell others about her. We will also never forget how many people have got in touch with the family in relation to Odette via you and the Tearooms! Authors, playwriters, businesses, institutes, and several others. It was as if you were a gatekeeper for Odette, providing the pathway for so many people to further Odette’s legacy.

Our family is very grateful to you, Nancy, and we want to do our best to express that. If only you and Odette could have met.

I know you and Toby must be feeling a sense of sadness at this point, but we hope you can look back with real admiration at what you created. For us, Odette’s Tearooms will remain one of the most touching and enduring tributes to Odette that we have ever known.

Public announcement.

It is with deep sadness that Odette’s Tearoom will be closing its doors for the final time on September 28th, 2024.

Odette’s has survived the pandemic, survived the recession but cannot survive the exponential increase in costs of stock and staff.

Toby (current owner) and Nancy (founder and ex-owner) want to thank everyone in Wellington, staff throughout the nine years and the public beyond, who have made the tearoom such a wonderful place to be, either as a customer or a member of the staff.

This has been a very difficult decision to make, and it brings sadness with it, but the economy is just not sympathetic to small businesses and we have to be pragmatic.

We would just ask one thing. If you can, please keep Odette’s story alive and in the public domain. She was inspirational, strong, brave and totally dedicated to her adopted country.

Odette’s family have supported the tearoom for the whole nine years we have been open. We would like to say a special thank you to them and to our amazing landlords, John Wrelton and Lee Tomkins, who have gone above and beyond the role of a landlord to try and help us survive.

Code name Lise, over and out.
